@Mamasmiles: don’t have any friends or family but great idea to call my guys, they might (??) be willing to give me the ropes, unless their policy is tight lipped to prevent it being used against them ;)
@SteelerGirl: I guess I do since no one laughed me out of the room yet? New Jersey.

We did this when my minivan was hit. I’m not sure of all the details but my husband was an insurance agent and he handled it all. Do you have any insurance friends or can you call your insurance company to see if they can help?

Oh that's great! Hope it works out for you! Do you live in a state where fault is assigned? Many states are no-fault states, so there is no blame assigned and everyone just recoups from their own insurer.

@SteelerGirl: ah, thanks for the info--but I'm seeking it from the insurance company of the person who hit me (Progressive), not from my own provider (Geiko). I just spoke with their adjustor and he told me there were online firms that help make a case for how much your value might have diminished (I guess kind of like a kelly blue book?)--so I was wondering if anyone had ever done this. Ultimately it's up to them whether or not they're going to throw me any money, but I gather from talking to the 3 different Progressive people that it's pretty commonly paid out, so I thought it was worth a shot.

I'm an actuary and I work in property and casualty insurance. In my opinion, you won't get your insurance company to compensate you unless this coverage was explicitly stated in your insurance documents prior to the accident. There are certain companies that offer this coverage (it's commonly called "new car replacement coverage"), but unless you selected it before the accident, it's unlikely you have it. Additionally, it raises your monthly premium (because it's an additional coverage), so many people don't choose it.

Hi, wondering if anyone has experience with this: just before Christmas I was rear-ended (softly, but by a 50-ft mack truck) with minimal damage to my bumper. I called the police and filed an accident report and finally got my brand new, formerly perfect condition Forester fixed. I want to be compensated for the diminished value of the car (as in, if we sold it, now its record is marred by having been in an accident) but don't really know how to go about doing so. I wrote to the adjuster who worked with me to get the repair done and he referred me to someone else who asked me to provide documents and reports, which, I have no idea what they're talking about.

Has anyone done this? The agency is Progressive and they're not going out of their way to make it easy. Thanks in advance.
