Go the Copper Onion and order the beef stroganoff! That was what a local told me when he gave us directions, and I'm so glad I listened. It's definitely a date night setting.

Ok, so first, you are going to be in town?! Cool! Let me know when you are going to be here!

I might recommend (in addition to the great places above):
Finca: Delicious tapas and great Spanish wines (their sommalier is terrific).
Frida Bistro
Bruges Waffles and Frites: This is great snack/lunch food and totally kid friendly.
Les Madelaines: Breakfast, pastries
Gourmandise: good lunches, terrific pastry
Tulie: Another great cake/pastry place.
Plum Alley: Asian fusion. Don't miss the pork belly buns.
Blue Nile: if you like Ethiopian, this place holds it's own with Seattle Ethiopian food.
Indochine: Vietnamese food. Really quite good. Fresh ingredients.

If you are going to Park City, check out the High West Distillery for great food and great whiskey.

I would skip Cafe Trio for Italian, I really don't find it that good.
We do go to Red Iguana all the time. It's pretty unique Mexican food. We also go to Copper Onion all the time. Sometimes it's quite crowded, but you can usually get in to Plum Alley, it's sister restaurant.

Edited to add: Sea Salt is pretty good for a woodfired oven pizza lunch. Usually for wood fired pizza dinner we go to Vinto and if you just want good NY style pizza, I would recommend Este. I don't care for the Pie, though people think of it as traditional SLC pizza (putting toppings beneath the cheese really defeats the purpose of toppings to me!). Oh and our local pizza type of choice is BBQ chicken. I also don't care too much for that (too salty).

Ok my sister emailed back, here ya go!!! She didn't lead us astray at all when we were there so I trust her suggestions :)

"Sorry I was putting some thought into this… I want slc to make a good impression:

RED IGUANA! (Mexican) really good, normally busy they just opened like the red iguana two down the block because it was so busy same chef though… Blue iguana is good too as mex open. And café rio is a chain but supposedly kids love it…

Squatters-, good salads, burgers, apps like bar food (we went there) but good for kids too. Love that place local beers too…

The Pie- pizza, really good but heavy for sure. Local brews and its local fav people here love it.

Crown burger- that food guy went here on the tv show, really good burgers they put pastrami on it if youlike that but like a lunch spot fastish food but really good.

Flat bread- new place- sugar house area (where you walked and shopped with mom)…good food kid friendly : ) it has outside ish part its cute…

Coffee- local place but a chain is beans and brew most people get, but start bucks is everywhere

The Park- Cheap open for breakfast and lunch, right by liberty park, we went there but it was snowing but def worth a stop and local fav.

Ruths Dinner- is a dinner kinda not in down town , its up emigration cannon but its my fav breakfast lunch ish spot its like homemade biscuits and like a lot of people travel to it.

If they get a date night, all local:

EVA- so good drinks and tapas

Copper Onion-n the guy visited this place to its good kinda pricey, kids can go recommend lunch cause it gets busy

Pago-expensive, but right by my place and sooo good

Café Trio- I think we went there by my place a little bit of everything but pasta is good, I think you can have kids there too esp earlier."

Hope this helps!

I'm going to ask my sister, she lives there and she and her husband love those kinds of places. We went to some great places while I was there but forget the names! Do they have to be kid friendly? (I assume yes but wasn't sure if you wanted names of any more adult places if you get to have a date night or something, etc.)

Blueplate diner is good (is that even still in business?). If you want to try some Peruvian food, Del Lago al Mar is really good (and reasonably priced). If you venture to Park City (30 minutes away), I'd recommend Windy Ridge Cafe and Silver Star Cafe. Cafe Terigo is good, too (they catered my wedding reception!).

Let me see if I can think of anything else. I haven't lived there in a long time but I am moving back in the next few weeks so I should probably pay attention to other suggestions here :)

We haven't tried a ton of places in the city, but some of the restaurants we have really liked are the Red Iguana (mexican), Bombay House (indian), and Aristo's (greek). Next up on our list to try is the Copper Onion, although I think we're going to wait for that one until we can get a date night without the kids. :)

So, our whirlwind trip (driving from Ohio to SLC and back with a 3 year old and a 10 month old) is coming up soon. We will be in SLC for about a week and are looking for good local places to eat. We really like "mom and pop" type places although regional chains are fine as well; any type of food. Where do you like to eat?
