@MoonMoon: I'm also going to try and reassure you that earlier bed times do not = earlier mornings! I was so so so nervous about this with our TERRIBLE sleeper, but now he goes to bed at 7 and doesn't get up until 7. :)

ok... sometimes 6:30 but that's still really great!

@MoonMoon: What I've read in the (many) sleep books I've read (ha ha) is that they actually usually sleep later in the morning if they have earlier bedtimes. I have generally found this to be true for my DSs.

Thank you all!
I'll try your suggestions-remembering that he's at a fussy stage, trying to nurse him closer to mealtime, and most importantly, making his dinner earlier. I think DH and I have been resisting moving his bedtime up, because we're afraid he'll wake up too early in the morning, but it sounds like he might need it right now!

I'll report back.

Agree with PPs - my first instinct is that maybe he is tired. My DS had a bedtime around 6 or even 530 till he was about 20 mos. We didn't always get to eat together, but one or both of us would sit down with him while he ate, and then it was kind of nice when DH and I could sit down to dinner together after he was in bed. Now, the baby (4 mos) is in bed around 6 and we sit down and eat with DS (2 years) after he's in bed. Its ok if you start emphasizing family dinner time when he's a little older (IMO).

Could be he is too tired? We don't do family dinners cause she wants to eat ASAP once we get home. Like I have 5 mins to use the microwave.

When was his last nap? Could he be tired?

It might also be a phase - I feel like Xander was pretty fussy during dinner at that age for seemingly no reason, and then all of a sudden it got better. Good luck to you!

We are kinda going through something similar. Last night was especially rough. I kind of think it's a combination of being tired (he's transitioning from 3 naps to 2) and this age is a developmental stage and they are prone to being fussier. (9 - 10 months). We also have major every day meltdowns at bath time.

Hopefully it's a phase and your LO will grow out of it soon! Keep in mind that a well adjusted child will never starve themselves! They'll eat when they're ready, just keep offering. ;)

@MoonMoon: I do think it would help! I was always in the mindset that "food is for fun before 1" - So I still made BM his main nutrition source and then let him eat what he wanted at mealtimes.

He may be very hungry and solids don't give him that immediate satiation like BM does

My initial thought was maybe he's just tired by dinner time and therefore more prone to meltdowns? I give mine dinner much earlier than when we eat, they usually have dinner at 5:30 and then bed by 7. I know family dinners are important but maybe you could all eat earlier? I'm just planning on waiting until they are a bit older for us all to sit down together. Sorry you're going through this!

@Mamaof2: Hmm, he nurses a handful of times throughout the day, but maybe I can time them closer to mealtimes. Do you think that would help?

Are you nursing 1st? At 10 months I would still nurse 1st then do solids 30 mins later

Bump.

It seems we're entering a general phase of mealtime shenanigans! This morning, the same thing happened at breakfast, which was not expected.

Any advice?

LO is almost 10 months old, and eats solids pretty well. He eats iron fortified cereal and fruit for breakfast, fruits and/or veggies and/or bread, hummus, etc for lunch, and sometimes snacks such as fruit or mum mums. We do BLW style, so sometimes he eats a bunch, sometimes it's more play. He still nurses a lot.

Our problem is dinner- he's been having a meltdown every night at dinner for a while, why?? We put him in his highchair and try to eat as a family. We've tried in the living room with music or TV in the background, and in the dining room with no distractions. We've tried table food, finger foods, spoon feeding, purees, pouches-nothing seems to stop him from starting out ok, but quickly refusing food and screaming/crying. We've tried removing him from the highchair, having him in our laps, on the floor...nothing helps!

Any advice? Is this a phase? I really want him to get used to family dinner, what bothers him, do you think?
