@dolphin: DS was 2.5 on the 11 hour flight. It was a daytime flight (not an overnight), and from what I recall he took a couple naps and was awake the rest of the time, but it wasn't too difficult keeping him entertained. Snacks were key! 1.5 is more difficult than 2.5 for sure, but you can always go on walks up and down the aisle, hang out with the flight attendants in the back, play with a few cups from the drinks cart... we did long-ish flights at that age, 7-8 hours, and it was more tiring but fine.

I don't know. We just came back from Hawaii to CA yesterday and it was really long! I wouldn't want additional travel days though. I think LO (3.5) wouldn't fallen asleep an additional time if the flight was longer. He slept for a couple of hours to and from.

@Beehive: Yes! I'm not as worried about the 4 year old since she's been pretty good on flights and she can watch movies! But the 1.5 year old worries me. :silly: How old was your DS when he was on the 11 hour flight? Did he nap for most of it or just want to play?

@Beth24: Isn't Hawaii awesome? I've been there with DH but never with kids so I'm sure this time will be quite different! I'm excited though! We are flying out of Chicago. When we fly back it will be a red-eye as well and I hope the kids sleep the whole time!

@misolee: Wow 13 hours! The thought of a long flight with kids is dreadful but I know I just got to do it and hope they do okay!

I avoid stopovers like the plague. If it were a few days in SF that might change my answer but too much of a hassle for 1 night IMO.

Nonstop.

1) Hello, Hawaii! Haha
2) As much as a stop would allow the kids a break, it's also very annoying to lug around stuff, get in & out of airport, etc
3) Your 3yr old might be like, plane again?! Versus just being stuck on the plane with no concept of how long it really is lol

Nonstop all the way. If ever there is a problem or delay, you are going to stress. I hate deboarding and waiting at the airport.

Nonstop. Long flights suck no matter what, so breaking it up into two long flights is my nightmare!

Nonstop for sure. If anything goes wrong, id rather be at origin or destination than somewhere in between. Plus long flights aren't that big of a deal to get up and walk around on.

Nonstop. It's a bigger hassle to get thru security, re packing things, etc. also, there's a higher chance of a flight getting delayed. Plus you have extra set of hands in flight too. I've done a 13 hour flight with my Lo at 1. It wasn't that bad. We're doing the same flight with my almost 4 year old and now a 7 month old later this year

Because of the 1.5 year old, I'd do a stopover. If they were both over 3, then nonstop. It will be nice for them to run around, grab a bite, and stretch their legs! I think when planned right, stopovers can be really enjoyable.

Eta: actually, I'm thinking of just a layover... Not a full day's stop! I think it'd be a hassle to go in and out of the airport just for a day.

I would choose non-stop, unless you could spend more than a day in SF. We did a non-stop to Hawaii a few years back and it was hard (and that was pre-kids), then stopped in SF for a weekend on the way back, and that was actually really nice. I don't know if a single day there would be worth it though, especially with kids.

I actually just did this trip with my 20
Month old! We flew to San Francisco from Ohio (5 hour flight) and stayed a few days before going on to Hawaii. It worked out great for us! She was awesome on both flights and I don't know that she would have done as well if we did 9 straight hours unless it was a red eye. We flew a red eye to Denver on the way back which was a bit less than 7 hours and she slept almost the whole time but it was exhausting for me. I didn't sleep because I was on alert ready to entertain her when she woke up.

Always non-stop. The layover adds so much more travel time. Breaking up the trip with a longer stay means doing TSA again, arriving early, etc. just bring as much as you can to entertain the kids.

Non-stop would probably be easier (think having to lug carseats and strollers and luggage through one additional airport/taxi/bart). But I love SF so I voted for the layover! And the flight from SFO to HNL is long enough as is...

I would prefer to break up a flight that long. 9 hours is a looooong time to ask a toddler to sit reasonably still.

I wouldn't stop for 1 day in San Fran; id rather do a several hour layover where you can stretch legs, get a real meal, etc then get back on the plane

We went to Hawaii last summer when DS was 20 months. We ended up having 3 layovers since we came from a small town on the east coast. I didn't mind it at all. We left early in the morning, and made it to Hawaii that evening. It was nice for DS to have some time to run around. But, we also used the USO which had food, Internet, movies, and a kids room filled with tons making out long layover in LA easy.

I've flown longer flights with DS and those are fine too. I always make sure I'm equipped with snacks, books, toys, and the IPad.

I vote nonstop. Stopovers are no fun, and it sounds like a lot of work to go to SF just for one day. We've done long flights with DS (his longest was 11 hours), and they have been fine. Now that he's 3.5 he'll just watch movies and nap the whole time, hopefully your almost 4 year old will do the same and you'll just have to entertain your 1.5 year old!

We're planning on going to Hawaii later this year. By then DD1 will be almost 4 and DD2 will be almost 1.5. The direct flight is 9 hours and this will be the longest flight we've ever flown with them. The longest in the past was 4 hours.

I usually love non-stop flight options when traveling with kids but because of the long flight time I wonder if it would be better to break it up. Our other option would be to make a pit stop in San Francisco (4 hours flight time) and spend a day there. We have extended family we could visit. And then fly from SF to Honolulu (5 hours flight time). I'm just not sure it's worth the inconvenience of going to the airport twice with luggage + two kids.

So if you were me, would you rather do the non-stop 9 hour flight and hope the kids don't go crazy or do a stop over and give the kids a break?

And not sure if this matters but we will be traveling with my parents too. So, an extra set of hands on the flight.
