@ksnow: I plan to do this at my next appointment. I did the same with Lo1 and I will ask to be written off starting at 36 weeks.

I'm in canada though so it may be a bit different.

Sorry you haven't had any luck so far! Pregnancy is hard and being pregnant while working is just too much. I'm so done lol

I was horribly uncomfortable towards the end. At about 36 weeks I was wanting to go out on disability. I had really bad swelling in my ankles and feet and sitting at my desk all day made it worse. Luckily my job allowed us 2 weeks off before the due date so I went out at 37+6 on a Friday (I took 2 days vacation) welllll...I went into labor that Monday. No wonder I was so uncomfortable!

My point is, listen to your body. If you really think you need to be out on leave, push for it. I wish I would have begged my dr to go out earlier since I was SO uncomfortable!!!

My doctor's office had a sign in the patient rooms that they will not write off patients before their due dates without a medical reason for bed rest. I do think it is a reasonable think to request.

I had no such disability coverage so I worked until I went into labor. I was home about 15 minutes before my water broke.

@ksnow: Just FYI from the other side...I worked from home starting around 38 weeks with K...I hated it. I was either bored or just anxious sitting there waiting for it to happen. I dont know if you have the ability to work from home but I'd recommend pursuing that...

My arrangement with my boss now is that starting next week I will loosen up a ton. Come in later to get better sleep...leave earlier...and work from home whenever I want. I have 2 things I am trying to get completed before I go on leave (probably need 2-3 more working days) but I have a small list of things that would be great to get done on top of that. So I just work on the key stuff now...the rest is all gravy...

Well i'm happy to hear 38 weeks seems like a standard out date even if you're not having issues. I didn't want them to think I was nuts/lazy for asking. :silly:

I'm sure I'd try to power thru if I lost pay/time with baby but if not it's like...why not?

My OB also told me that she puts patients on medical leave at 38 weeks if they request it! I was put on medical leave with my first pregnancy because I developed pre-e. It looks like I"m headed that way this time too, but it's nice knowing that she'd do that for me regardless. The final weeks really are uncomfortable.

I took advantage of this. I worked on an elementary school schedule and was 38 weeks when school let out, for summer. My doctor submitted a form, and I took disability leave for the full, allowed 4 weeks, leading up to the birth. My 12 weeks of partially paid leave began when my daughter was born at 42 weeks.

With LO1 I got really sick at the end. I was really close to pre-e, and I could barely move. At 38 weeks they put me on bed rest and told me to stop working. I had no issues with my STD because it was considered two different things - one was technically the pregnancy that made me "disabled" the other was the birth.

For my current pregnancy I asked about being put on leave early again, and the midwife told me just to tell them when I was ready to stop working and they'd write a note!

My benefits work just like yours and I took off starting at 38+2. Since there is no penalty for going on disability early (since my company holds jobs beyond just FMLA), I saw no reason to continue working. I got a lot of nesting done...although it did make waiting for baby's arrival feel like forever! But I am glad I did it now.

My doc had no problem filling out the paperwork (and was happy because my commute is long) and I had 10 biz days to get my paperwork in.

I had this as well. My OB practice considered "advanced pregnancy" (anything beyond 38 weeks) sufficient cause for the disability letter.

For the first pregnancy, I assumed I would wait until I had the baby to go on leave. But as the date approached, it just seemed stressful for everyone to not have a set end-date. (I am a professor, and other people had to cover my classes for me; waiting until the day of to tell them they had to start seemed crazy at the end! So I officially went on leave one week before my due date; baby was born a few days later. For #2, I went on leave at 38 weeks and baby came 1 week late; the naps I took in those three weeks were fantastic!

@bluestriped bee: Yes my DR would definitely have to fill out the form. I've got all my forms printed out already since I had to bring them in anyway (they said to do once I was within 30 days of my EDD...) so I'm just wondering if I should mention I wouldn't hate to be out at 38 weeks rather than whenever labor starts ha.

I think your Dr has to fill out a form that says you are disabled to use any disability benefits.

I was on 6 weeks of hospital bed rest before the twins came. My dr said that I wasn't bed ridden (I could walk around my room, but had to be wheel chaired around outside of my room). I tried working from the hospital so I wasn't 'disabled'. I did end up filing for disability benefits (through my work) after I struggled with working from the hospital. It did not affect my 8 weeks of leave after the babies got here.

With the way my insurance/company works if the DR puts me on short term disability prior to my due date, it wouldn't "take away" any of my time off after baby is born. And I'd get paid at my regular rate.

Since I have a desk job, and am not high-risk/Pre-E/etc I just assumed I'd work until I went into labor. I've been getting questions though from family/coworkers about when is my last day and my mom suggested I talk to my DR about going out early. At first I thought there's no way they'd do that, but with some googling I see a lot of women who say that most DRs will do this at 38 weeks or so just for general pregnancy exhaustion or whatever?

My DR hasn't brought it up, but they don't know I work either, I have my 37 week appointment next week and was preparing my insurance forms this week to bring with me for my after baby leave...but I'm wondering if I should ask about this? I don't want them to think I'm a crazy person for requesting it, and I don't want them to think I'm asking them to make something up like I'm high risk or something. But wondering if I should bring it up? Again, no real complications just like every other pregnant person at this point, tired, swollen, sore back, catching colds...

Details on my leave as I understand it so far:
(After baby is born I'll get 6 weeks Short Term Disability, 2 weeks parental, 5 weeks Paid Time Off that I've saved, and then running concurrently with those options for 12 weeks FMLA [which I won't need since I'll surpass with paid leave} and 24 weeks unpaid parental leave, which I may use for 2 weeks or so, but not enough that it would matter if I went out on disability prior to my due date.)
