@hoogirl05: Hopefully they'll have some good news for you! And I also wanted to add that I had an emergency delivery and my OB was the one who made the call, I don't think the MFM had anything to do with that decision!

Fingers crossed for smooth sailing for the rest of your pregnancy

@petunia354: That's a good point, and honestly I don't mind going back. I am hoping talking with my OB about the most recent results will help alleviate my concerns.

I guess I don't see what the point is in cancelling. I mean, if they want you to come back then just go back and get the scan! I don't mean to be a fear monger but god forbid something changes and your OB doesn't catch it, the MFM is a good back-up!

I did have a high risk pregnancy though and saw an MFM the entire time in addition to my OB. I had a great experience and should we ever choose to have another I would see an MFM again. They may be overly cautious but I don't think they would demand that you have a c section or induction without consulting with your OB first.

I saw a midwife, and my midwife practice has a mfm doctor who does the 20 week anatomy scans. When I went for mine, the mfm dr said my baby was measuring on the small side and wanted me to come back for additional growth scans. I thought about it, discussed it with my midwife, and declined. I'm petite, I didn't really gain weight til later in my pregnancy, and I knew baby was healthy. She was nearly 8 lbs at birth. I believe I made the right call, and also believe the mfm doctors tend to be overly cautious just because of the nature of their work.

@hoogirl05: Yeah, mine was just a little brown spotting. I would wait for your OB to see the the results from the MFM. Maybe your OB will say you don't need to see them and maybe your OB will want you to be seen. MFMs are more specialized so if your OB has any concerns, I could see why they would still tell you to go.

@bluestriped bee: I was referred to the MFM because of the SCH at 14 weeks and continued spotting (TMI, but I was fortunate it was brown and not gushing or anything, just still there).

Besides the SCH I'm not high risk at all! Normal vaginal birth for DD 2 years ago.

@hoogirl05: Just curious, did your OB recommend you start seeing an MFM? Why did you begin seeing a MFM? I started out with my OB for my twin pregnancy and my OB asked me if I wanted to stay with her or go to an MFM. There was nothing high risk about my pregnancy and she said she has twin moms so I decided I would stay with her. I even asked the users here and a twin pregnancy doesn't always mean you are high risk. I did have to see the MFM a few times but that was because they saw something on the ultrasound and she wanted an MFM to take a closer look.

I do think an MFM can do more accurate scans and knows what to look out for versus an OB since they are more specialized.

Oh, I do remember asking the MFM after one of my appt if I would begin seeing her on a regular basis, she said they'll send everything they found to my OB and I'll be referred back there if she thinks I should.

Oh, I had a SCH also around 14 weeks and it resolved itself.

@avivoca: Thanks! I asked him yesterday whether the MFM would release me from future visits and he laughed and said not to hold my breath, so I'm guessing he's not going to recommend stopping seeing them.

And you're right, he (or one of the other docs in the small practice, all of whom I love) will be delivering my baby and those recommendations are the ones I'll follow.

The MFM is not your main doctor, so I would not concern myself with their recommendations for c-section/induction. Your OB is more familiar with you, your pregnancy history, and your last labor. But yes, I would keep seeing the MFM if your OB wants you to.

Hi bees, I'm a frequent lurker and have a question I'd love thoughts on! My story: I'm due with Baby #2 in mid-May, had a subchorionic hemorrhage from 14-20 weeks (no history of any issues, out of the blue and scary but very fortunate it was not large) which resolved on its own and wasn't even visible by my 21 week appointment at the MFM - the tech had to ask where it was supposed to be!

Following that appointment the MFM didn't need to see me until this week (31w) and everything looks good, but they are estimating that it will be a big baby. Where my OB's u/s measured him at 3lb 9 oz yesterday, his equipment isn't as sensitive and the tech at the MFM today estimated baby at 4lb 10oz. My daughter was about 8.5lb so not surprising that baby #2 could be bigger. The MFM wanted to see me back in 6 weeks for another growth scan and expressed concern about a bigger baby and vaguely alluded to potential issues if baby continued to measure 86th percentile.

My question is this: I will obviously talk to my OB about this, since I'll see him several times before my next appointment, but is it really worth it to continue with the MFM and keep the appointment in 6 weeks?

This isn't my first baby and I have a doula I love and a realistic and flexible birth plan, with a focus on healthy mom and baby above all else. But I worry that at my next visit if baby stays on the same growth trajectory, the MFM will bring up a planned c-section or early induction, and I'd like to let things play out, particularly since my OB of 15+ years hasn't mentioned a thing about concerns about size etc.
