@SugarplumsMom: I love looking ahead and seeing all the fun options you can do to personalize the trip to the people who are going! Besides what I mentioned above, another secret spot is getting early and experiencing the rope drop. Here's a good site- http://dlrprepschool.com/magical-ways-to-start-your-disneyland-days/

@junebugsmama: Nah, DL isn't bad. WDW definitely needs more planning, I think.

The only things we ever plan ahead with or DL are the Blue Bayou and the BBBoutique for LO. Otherwise, you can't fastpass things in advance, so just figure out what rides you want to hit and enjoy your day! There are good apps that have pretty decent/realtime wait times which are extremely helpful.

@junebugsmama: Seriously i put no fore-thought into going except bringing someone who has annual passes and knows the park well. We had a great time, better than I could have hoped. Some people love to plan for the "best-day ever" but I'd rather not stress about it and just have a good time

@junebugsmama: Disneyland is actually still fairly low key. You can definitely decide to go the day of and still hit the major rides. While I think wdw is a lot more complicated and really needs more advance planning.

@catlady: touringplans.com has a Disneyland section too. We used it 2x for DL and 2x for DW.
My secret tip is Steakhouse 55 for an end of trip breakfast. It's not well known and it is @ the Disneyland Hotel. Very affordable but fancy environment. Your grandma (or mom) would love it for the nostalgia. Never books up too far in advance and you can go before the parks open. Plus you can go into the Goofy picture taking place next door. The staff is very friendly to kids in there even though it looks like fine dining. Prices are good for breakfast though.

Also Cars Land Flo's V8 cafe has a yummy, simple breakfast you can sit out back and eat a quick affordable breakfast as you watch the cars whiz by.

We just got back from a Disneyworld vacation. Most of the key things we did were the advanced planning/reservation stuff which it seems like you can't do, but I also got a subscription to touringplans.com, read up on which attractions typically had short wait times at which times of day and which ones they recommend you get fastpasses for, and made customized touring plans for each day of our trip. Then I downloaded their app and used it to tweak plans as needed on each day. It worked out amazingly well. Between the info from the site and our fastpasses, we didn't wait longer than 10 min for anything.

There are probably other sites that have a similar thing if the one I used doesn't have Disneyland (I think it does though).

The thing I love about Disneyland, that doesn't apply at wdw, is that you really don't have to plan that much.

I'm assuming you're just planning on Disneyland but if you do California adventures too it'd get fast passes first thing for the cars ride if your planning on doing it. Also technically I think you can hold passes for both parks at once but that'd likely be a ton of walking.

@T.H.O.U.: & @Mrs. Microscope: Disneyland dining reservations are only 60 days ahead and they don't have the online FastPass like WDW (unfortunately!!).

Definitely book your Blue Bayou reservation online when reservations open.

There is a Bibbidy Bobbidi Boutique if that's something your LO would be interested in. You'll need prior reservations for that as well, and it's located by/inside Sleeping Beauty's castle.

Get a churro!

Dining reservations are 180 prior to your trip via phone or online so book now! You can cancel within 24 hours.

Fast Pass is also 30 days ahead if you aren't staying on property.

Be sure you get your dining reservations the day they open, usually 180 days before. Get an appointment in the morning for bibbidy bobbity boutique so DD can enjoy her make over all day. Get fastpasses as appropriate (send your husband and grandma while you are at the boutique). Watch the parades, getting there early to get a front row spot so DD can see. Take an umbrella stroller if she gets tired easily, it's a long day of walking!

You can make dining reservations online now!

Character breakfasts would be fun! And making an appointment at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique to get dolled up like a princess.

If she likes Frozen, there's a meet and greet with Anna and Elsa at California Adventure, and separately, Olaf.

You can download the Disneyland app for attraction wait times.

You can call in advance to make a reservation for blue bayou. Also I know they do breakfast with the princesses. Maybe look into that. Not sure what else people will add but I'm excited to see!! We will be taking our 1 and 2 yr olds in September :)

So looks like we're going to Disneyland during our next family visit (grandma was very convincing) I've been there a few times (many years ago), but never with children. Are there any secret locations/reservations/places we should look out for during our trip? DD will be 4.5 yrs old.

By tips and tricks, I remember making it an early morning priority to reserve a table at that bayou restaurant (back then, you can only reserve in-person for that same day). Is there any fun kid restaurants or activities that aren't so publicly known? We'll be going mid Jan.

Thanks!
