@T.H.O.U.: Thanks for posting that! We ended up choosing the Florida resident weekday annual pass and plan to go back two or three more times during the year. It wasn't much more than the four day pass and they were having a promotion with 13 months for the price of 12. I'm excited! I think our first trip in a couple of weeks will be a good chance to get a feel for things and see what we might want to plan more carefully in the future.

@Jennibenni: You can get Mickey Fast Passes to avoid the long line. There wasn't a line a Animal Kingdom first thing in the morning whereas at Epcot we definitely needed a fast pass and were hard to come by for late planners. Good thing you are so loose and flexible.
My friends got DL annual passes and lived out of state. They just timed it for 10 days one year and 10 days right as it ran out the following year. If I knew I wanted to go two years in a row, I would have done that. But wasn't certain until two months after I came back from first trip.

@Jennibenni: we are still four hours away but many friends have passes. For us we don't want to go too often (to keep it magical) and it means a hotel stay. So the spring four day pass has been perfect.

@Boogs: You're probably right! I think we might go with an annual pass option because if we do one more trip for the year it will pay for itself!

I'm not a FL resident, but if Disney was that close to us, we would definitely spring for some sort of passes. Have fun on your trip!

@yoursilverlining: That's true! I've only been twice in my life and I always see people planning a year or more in advance but I think going in with low expectations will help. I definitely don't have specific things I want to book, I think we just want to see Mickey and that's about it on our list.

Of course it's possible to do Disney on short notice - I think that's what most people do. You only need to plan ahead if you want very specific restaurant reservations, very specific FastPasses for rides/meet&greets, very specific hotel desires (I have a friend who only wants to stay in a certain ROOM at one of the hotels, so yeah, she has to book way in advance usually, but that's an odd request anyway!), etc. And other people plan way ahead because it's a huge (and expen$ive) family trip so they may take several months to pay for it in full.

If you go on very short notice will you be able to do *everything* you might want to do (i.e., have short/no lines for your top rides or character meets, eat at whatever restaurant you want to at whatever time you want to) - - probably not. But that doesn't mean you won't have an awesome time!

Disney on short notice is totally doable.

If you plan to go 3+ a year and stay a couple days annual passes make sense. We visited Universal Studios more than DW because of specific attractions & events. Either way we always stayed off property at a hotel where we could use our points. We always got Fast Passes to make the most of our 1-2 day jaunts.

@Jennibenni: you can make dining reservations 180 days in advance. Even if you aren't 100% sure what you'll do make a few. Most require a CC to make the reservation but you can cancel within 24 hours.

Fast pass is the other thing that can be hard to get. If you stay on property you can sign up for those early. But even if you don't it's not hard. You do have to have a ticket linked to your account to book those.

You probably wont be able to get magic bands which is fun but not a necessity. You can order from Disney store or buy on site if you do want them.

With LO, just hit Magic Kingdom and either Hollywood Studios or Animal Kingdom. Start reserving your fast passes 30 days out. Sometimes restaurants open up the week or a few days before due to cancellations. Download myDisney Experience.

Totally doable!

For the past few years they've run a FL resident promotion in Jan-may. Last year it was a four day ticket for $220 after tax. You can use the four days any time within a six month period.

Fellow Florida bees, help me out! My husband and I have never been frequent Disney people and with all the changes over the last several years I fee way out of the loop on navigating the Disney waters. I was thinking about going with our 18 month old for two days or so in January or February. Is that doable on such short notice? I know people plan Disney vacations years in advance so I feel like is it even possible to plan to go this late? Granted we are talking about a weekend and not a huge weeklong trip etc.

Any tips about best practices as a Florida resident? If we go should we just spring for the annual passes? We are 2.5 hours away if that makes a difference.
