@hilsy85: I thought so. :) ugh, remember those days??

@Espion: the therapist was an occupational therapist who specialized in this type of therapy, so I'd search for any suck and swallow specialist for babies. Both our pediatrician and LC knew of her so perhaps you can start there.
Honestly, it got better immediately. I was stubborn and didn't want to spend more money and scoffed at a "craniosacral therapist". It took me til she was 6 weeks and I was EPing because I was in so much pain. As a last resort, I went to her, and after an hour's session of massage, DD was already opening wider. Most of the exercises I couldn't do myself at home because it was related to tension in her head, neck, jaw, and shoulders due to her "fascia" in her head not settling well due to my labor & delivery (which was as normal as could be, so who knows?), so the therapist had to do some massage. DD also had a hypersensitive palate. Basically, she would gag when the nipple would be where it's supposed to go, so it resulted in a shallow latch. We would rub the palate to desensitize it. I don't know if that even made a difference..it was really the massage and the better opening of her mouth as well as the ability to turn her head more comfortably to latch on.

@Tidybee: @hilsy85: I'm in Georgia (ATL area) with the added bonus of moving to Alaska next month, with a layover in Texas. (We'll be out of Georgia by the end of this month.) So I am even more stressed, because my timeline is crunched.

I have an emergency appointment with a speech therapist on the 18th. If I'm looking for a cranio-sacral therapist, what kind of qualifications would I look for? Are there ones who specialize in kids?

@Tidybee: If you don't mind me asking, did it take a long time to get better? Did you have exercises at home?

Also just want to say that if he's nursing that long, NO WONDER you have pain during nursing!!! Your poor nips must be about ready to fall off. I'm glad you at least know what the issue is now and hopefully are able to meet with someone ASAP!

We had this exact problem and a cranio sacral therapist solved all of the problems! We've been EBF for 7 months. If you're in the NYC area, I can certainly give you my lady.

Where are you located? I agree with seeing a chiropractor or a cranio sacral therapist. If you're in NYC I can give some recs! Good luck!

@Espion: I'm sorry that things aren't going well with nursing at the moment, it's such a learning curve for both mama and baby and there's nothing wrong with having a meltdown or two (Lord know I had a few myself!).

I don't really know anything about a disorganised suck, but I did find what could be a helpful article on the internet - hope this helps!

http://www.justbreastfeeding.com/sore-nipple-management/suck-training-tool-breastfed-baby/

Your other option could be looking into visiting a chiropractor or cranial osteopath, perhaps your LO has some tension / strain in their jaw, neck etc., particularly if delivery was long or traumatic. I took my LO to a cranial osteopath when she was about three weeks old and he was able to stretch out some tight muscles / ligaments etc which helped our breastfeeding.

Hang in there and I hope you get into see the OT soon!

I hope it gets better soon! I know my chiropractor helps with babies who have feeding difficulties by doing different types of adjustments on them. We were concerned about my supply due to other issues that I've got and my midwife had me pumping after every feeding to make sure I was empty on both sides and I took Motherlove More Milk Plus & Motherlove Goats Rue...they definitely helped! Eating lactation cookies and drinking tons of water (seriously, like a gallon) a day always helps bring up my supply.

So my little guy is 6 days old, full term, otherwise healthy, and to make a long story short, he's got a disorganized suck reflex (even if we give him a bottle, he doesn't know what to do with it and as a result I now have a super low supply. (Because he is not emptying the breast effectively and therefore there is no real "demand".)

I had an epic meltdown last night. I'm not one for crying in front of DH, but I'm starving my kid and we have no other way to feed him. (DH forced me to crawl into bed and he stayed up all night coaxing E to take 35mL from a bottle. I love my DH so much!)

Today we saw the pediatrician and a LC. The good news is that he weighs the same as his discharge weight. The bad news is that his 3 hour marathon nursing sessions now make sense. When the LC weighed E before and after nursing each side for 20 minutes each, he got NINE mLs. NINE. Now I know why he is so crazy in the evenings, it's because he's hungry. :(

Right now I'm pulling out all the stops to boost supply. I'm pumping like crazy to feed him after nursing sessions and we're desperately trying to get in to see an occupational therapist before we move out of state in 2 weeks.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Has anyone had to see an OT for feeding difficulties?
