@blackbird: that's just silly on the flight attendant's part because I see paying passengers in first and business wearing all kinds of stuff, especially with all the ways to get upgrades these days. Although I guess first and business to tend to skew slightly dressier.

@anagram, true story, I flew business class for work once and it was an overnight flight to Europe, so i had yoga pants on. The flight attendant didn't believe I was traveling business until i handed her my ticket and tried to argue with me about how I needed to wait my turn.

PS my favorite sweatpants are the Under Armor performance ones. They don't look like sweatpants off the bat.

@MrsKoala: @MsLipGloss: Glad I'm not alone! I think it's because my dad was a pilot for American, so growing up we only flew standby and they have a dress code for Standby passengers (no gym wear, no sleep wear, no flip flops, etc). My parents also made us dress for first class (stricter dress code for standby--like no jeans and no trainers!) because we were a big family so we always took available first class seats too, so we could all get on the flight.

So I still sort of dress that way...except now I'd wear jeans at least. But jeans and a nice top.

I always try to dress "nicely" when travelling internationally. That being said, it's usually lululemon leggings, nice flats, a big sweater, and a scarf. Comfortable, warm, but I don't look like I just rolled out of bed. I would never wear sweats.

I am all about comfort while flying, especially if it's a long, international flight. However, I do agree w/PPs that how you're dressed does influence how you're treated.

When I flew to Korea, I wore black yoga pants and a fitted zip-up hoodie. Both items were new so they looked nice, and I was still super comfy throughout the entire 11-hour flight! Win Win :)

I personally wouldn't travel in sweatpants, and seriously, I agree with @PinkElephant, how you are dressed makes a difference in how you are treated. There are other options aside from sweatpants (and I know we're all thinking the gathered at the ankle, light gray with words down the side version).

Having lived in Japan for several years, I can tell you that i's feel very out if place in the airport/checking in to a hotel in sweats/yoga pants . On my flights to/from Tokyo it was common to see Japanese women changing outfits and doing full hair and makeup prior to landing (I'm talking about battery-powered curling irons!). I don't think disrespectful is the right word but I think it would be considered odd, even for a tourist, by locals.

That said, she should definitely do what makes her comfortable. Maybe wear sweats in the plane but change to something like leggings and a tunic sweater before landing, or I guess wear that the whole time if she thinks changing is a hassle. It may be superficial but I do think your appearance can greatly affect how you are treated when you travel (in terms of level if service received, upgrades, etc.) - looking pulled together seems to help convey your expectations of good service, where as looking relaxed/like you are at home sends more of an "I don't care just let me sleep!" Message.

I remember when I flew to China I was told that tank tops would have been disrespectful and to make sure to have sleeves, but I was with a group. I've never heard of this as a Japanese no-no but I wouldn't be surprised. Even if I don't know people I think it's important to be respectful so I'd look into it but I don't think it's a big deal for air travel.

I can see how it would be against the norm to wear sweatpants in certain Asian cities because they tend to be much more dressed up than we are...like I would feel awkward wearing sweats in parts of Seoul. Not because it's disrespectful per se, but because women there are very obvious about giving each other looks and comments when someone isn't wearing the right thing. But in the airport...you're leaving the local community and about to get on the plane for a long uncomfortable flight. Those rules don't apply so much anymore.

Weird that she's putting more importance into someone's very random and probably inaccurate "advice" than her own comfort. I mean, it's an airport filled with complete strangers she will likely never see again. Why would anyone even care what she's wearing to an international flight?! Is she a celebrity? Because that's the only reason why I'd think it would matter. Disrespectful to her fans that expect to see her done up?

Most Japanese females are very into fashion and would not wear sweatpants but by personal preference, not because it's disrespectful in any way.
