I’ve lived in Portland for about 5.5 years now. It’s definitely less diverse then where I grew up (so cal) but I don’t feel like it completely lacks in diversity. My husband is half black and we have many friends who are not white (full black, Asian, Hispanic, etc) its more diverse in the northeast but where we live now (Beaverton) there are a lot of Hispanic and white people. I never go out and see only white people! I would never ever say it’s not diverse. Maybe not as diverse as other cities, sure. Also, you can totally have goats in Portland. Our old neighbors had a few within city limits and tons of people have chickens.

That's a good point! Obviously my children will have my husband and his whole family to help with the cultural differences.
I hope you at least come visit the green state. Oregon is beautiful and has a lot to offer. :)

@Pebbles: Yeah, the idea of a liberal smaller town in Oregon was pretty appealing to me. However, as a black child of two white women, I just don't think I can do it to her. If we didn't have the option of other places, sure, we would make it work. But I've done quite a bit of research on transracial adoption and I think having a community with many racial mirrors will be critical for her, especially since (if we adopt) she won't have that in her immediate or extended family.

Oregon born and raised here. Honestly the diversity is hit or miss. My husband is very black and I am very white so I have thought about this topic for when we have kids(still trying). We met and married in another state and then moved back to my home state of Oregon. He is almost always the only black person in sight. We live in a city of 50,000 or so. He doesn't mind. I have found most people to be accepting of other races as well as biracial relationships. Certain areas do have a large Hispanic population. My friends 1st grader only has 8 white children to 15 Hispanic children in his class. She loves it because he is learning Spanish.
The point I'm trying to make is in my experience Oregon is VERY liberal. Very LGBT friendly. Anti trump. And pro recycling. If you don't recycle, you should not live here. 😂 Go green.
Some of the rural areas do have some racism, but as a whole Oregon is accepting of all. I feel like your best bet would be a medium sized town. Not a huge city and not a tiny town.
Do you have any questions about specific cities/locations?

@youboots: Yeah, I'm learning that this is a reality. I just read this:

https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/07/racist-history-portland/492035/

And we've now crossed Portland off of the list. Currently looking in the Sacramento or Fairfield area of CA.

I think you may find Sherwood Oregon to meet some of your requirements. Honestly though there is not much racial diversity in Oregon. But I do like to think that even the more rural areas are LGBT friendly.

We live in Yolo County, 20 minutes from Sacramento, which is diverse for sure. The town we live in is a weird mix. Definitely a small town feel, with a Main Street and Ag-related activities, lots of kids in 4H (pros), but with lots of the same white conservative giant SUV NIMBY types as I'm sure you are familiar with. However, we are an interracial couple and we haven't had a lick of trouble here. We don't see that many black people in our area, but there is a solid number of Latino, southeast Asian, and mixed race children in town. We also have a very tight foster parent community and I personally know 4-5 who have fostered or foster adopted biracial, black, and Latino kids. The County is also home to Davis and UC Davis which is extremely diverse but sort of a polar opposite to the rest of the County in a super liberal anti-growth type way (i.e. Ridiculous property values and taxes and lots of social activism). If you had to give up your animals, there are plenty of farms and picking patches around here with lots of animals for the kids to interact with on a regular basis. That and the gangs of wild turkeys that roam the streets!

The property values in the county are rising fast but still very affordable compared to the rest of Northern CA. I work in Sac and I have a 30 minute commute and DH supercommutes to the Bay Area a few times a week in about 75-90 minutes. We have all the normal shopping you would need.

Looking for recommendations. I know Oregon isn't the most diverse state, so bear with me. We are looking at the possibility of little O staying with us forever. Still a ways off, but we are getting closer and want to at least consider the future. We live in a rural, conservative area that lacks in diversity. She is bi-racial. We strongly believe that it would be better to raise her in an area with more racial diversity (as well as, ideally, a more progressive area-we are two moms and don't want her to be singled out more than she already will be).

We are looking for an area that is:

-reasonably affordable cost of living (Bay Area would be great but is unrealistic for us)
-racial/ethnic diversity so that she isn't the only kid of color in her class/neighborhood
-we are open to small cities and smaller towns. We would like to be able to have our goats and ponies still, so probably not living right in the city. This is the hard part-combining this kind of life with more racial diversity.

Any ideas? We've thought about Portland, and probably in that case would end up giving up our ponies and goats (although I heard goats were legal in the city limits?!) But are there towns/small cities we aren't thinking of?
