@mrsbrewer: It works great! DH often works in dusty warehouses and moves around boxes and stuff, and it gets his clothes smelling clean. There are essential oils in the recipe, but everything comes out of the dryer smelling like nothing at all. Just clothes. I actually looked into the home made stuff because DH has eczema and everything irritated it. The home made stuff doesn't bother his skin at all.

@regberadaisy: LOL! Yea I asked my husband if he would mind me using a fragrance, and he said that if he could smell any hint of flowers or "girly" he would not be ok with it. I'm thinking of the au naturale way as well ;-)

@MrsBrewer: Nope, my husband is not a fan of fragrance so I leave it au naturale! I use bounce sheets in the dryer though, he LOVES the smell of bounce and refuses to let me use anything else! :P

@regberadaisy: Awesome great to know! I would hate it if his t-shirts were still stinky after being washed! Do you add any fragrance to your soap?

@MrsBrewer: my husband has a physical job as well and also works out/runs a ton. The recipe we both have works GREAT for getting out the sweat and grime. Usually if I'm washing work out clothes I'll sprinkle in about a tablespoon or two of baking soda. It helps to get the odor out!

@lovelife: I like the sound of that dishwasher detergent! Might try it...

@joyjoy: Does it work well? I'm just hoping that the homemade detergents will get out dirt and sweat (DH works in a warehouse) as well as what I'm using now (Tide free and clear)

I buy Mrs Jones Soapbox homemade laundry detergent (same ingredients as the recipes) in my HE, and I don't use fabric softener at all. I've been planning to try making my own, but I haven't gotten around to it. I have all the ingredients for it just sitting under my sink.

we used this! we made it in early January which made two full coffee cans and today I used the last off it! lasts forever. We also used vinegar as a rinse aid

@regberadaisy: Awesome information. I think I might end up using the Ivory soap. I have very sensitive skin, and I use Ivory bar soap as my regular soap in the shower (plus then I have it on hand!)

@looch: I have read that the homemade laundry soaps can be used in HE machines (I have an HE washing machine at home and I plan to try) I read that it works because these "recipes" don't really get suddy/bubbly and that is the main concern for HE machines

@MrsBrewer: I haven't used Fels? The recipe I started from uses Ivory so I just kept using it.

Here are a few dishwasher detergent recipes:
http://www.stretcher.com/stories/02/02dec09b.cfm
http://achingdebts.com/make-your-own-dishwasher-soap-more/

Personally I just buy the cheapest dishwasher powder then mix with equal parts baking soda to stretch it out. Works great!

@looch: I don't have a front loader but I know on the recipe I follow it does say you can use it on FLs.

And to check that using non commercial or HE labeled detergent won't void warranties on newer machines.

Baking soda and vinegar are good building blocks for cleaning supplies.

I am curious myself about the laundry detergent, does it work for HE front loading machines too?

I've been making my own laundry and dishwasher detergent for a few years now.
@MrsBrewer: I basically use the same recipe but use Ivory Soap.

SO much cheaper, all natural and works just as well as the name brands.

So I have been trying to use more all natural ingredients in everything I do lately. I think it's easier that way to get back to the basics with some things and it saves a lot of money! I haven't started yet, but I plan on going to the store later and picking up my supplies. I am going to start making my own laundry soap following this....
http://frugallygreen.blogspot.com/2008/05/how-to-make-your-own-laundry-soap.html

...and I am in search of finding a recipe for shampoo and conditioner! I go through SOOO much!!

Is there anything that anyone else makes themselves versus buying? I would love more ideas!
