Thanks so much everyone! I wouldn't have had as many good ideas and it's a lot to think about. I think you gals are absolutely right, the wood pieces should be white. It'll really make them look like new. As for the shelves themselves, I'm partial to the A) accent color with possible ombre effect, b) the decoupage fabric/paper idea or c) the contact paper. B sounds most daunting to me so it'll probably be A or C.

Did you see the Target sales paper today? I don't know if it was nationally but I assume so - they're going to start selling pots of paint and contact paper? And I really liked some of the contact paper in the ad! So maybe start painting white and see how the mood (or Target ;) ) strikes me.

I would paint the outer wood white. Then I would decoupage the shelves a pattern that you like ( that matches your theme of the room). The best material is wrapping paper. After that dries then seal everything with a varnish or lacquer.

I would paint it to match the theme or color of the room it's going to be in.

I like @mrs.shinerbock: 's ombre paint idea even better! I'd do a white outside, then pick a paint colorstrip you like and go down the color gradient using test pots.

My first thought was an ombré paint job, but I like the fabric idea too.

I would do something like @Aria suggested. I find it easier to find fabrics I love. And paint the rest some coordinating color.

I would paint the dark brown shelves an accent color. Maybe coral or navy or something "fun." Then, I would paint the rest white, gray, beige (some kind of neutral color.)

If you can't find contact paper you like you could try fabric with modge podge (I did one layer underneath the fabric to adhere it and then another on top to protect it). I redid a filing cabinet that way, and it held up really well.

NICE!! I'm super jealous!

I'm a sucker for white furniture, so I would sand, prime, and paint. Young House Love has great tutorials that I use for all of my refinishing projects.

Contact paper would look nice in between the shelves or maybe a wallpaper? Like you, I have a difficult time finding a contact paper pattern I like.

MIL found this shelf for us today at a church daycare coosing sale. If she's able to she's going to go back and get us one or two more. I'm grateful since I was thinking of building something similar.

But now I'm left with at least one (but hopefully more!) bookshelves that are in desperate need of an update. What would you do? Paint? Spray paint? I thought about using contact paper but I'm having problems finding any patterned ones that I like. What would you do? Inspire me!
