DH built this and it fits over his table. It is nice because we can put the legos away. DS builds at the table but not always attached. I say you could use your coffee table without any plates attached, then at least the legis have an area.

@SugarplumsMom: It's much more organized, which I love. We have ours organized by colors, so it makes it easier to find what we are looking for.

We turned our train table into a lego table. He had never been very interested in it as a train table. He pulls up an ottoman and just sits next to the table, or kneels on the ground. We flipped the train table surface over so that it can theoretically still be used as a train table and used an adhesive that looked like a tube of caulk to secure the panels. We didn't even rough up the surface and have had no problem with the panels pulling up since Christmas.

ETA: we used these base plates, much less expensive! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01H6N6HPA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

@Boogs: That's quite a setup! I love the organization.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I :heart: round table.

@honeybear: She doesn't use baseplates at all and mainly builds on the ground. But I've noticed how enamored she is with Lego tables at play houses with the stationary plates. Plus, being on the ground kills my poor knees.

@Bao: Ok, I'm going to test it. I ordered 1 baseplate and see if she's into it. If she is, I found a generic brand that's supposed to be better than the original (by Brickyard). Cheaper, too!

@bookwormmama: I love that. We'll have enough room all around the coffeetable if we do it.

@looch: DD builds on the ground as well. I bet I'm just making my life harder for no reason. Lol.

I made a smaller train table with pieces glued down from the first table you pictured (the Lack from IKEA). My son would always break the tracks and get frustrated. I like the smaller surface too so he can easily walk around it.

As for the securing the base plates, maybe you could get those foam adhesive squares? The ones that are stronger than command strips (or try command strips first, but I'm not sure they'd hold up as well). Then you'd be able to get the base plates off again. It might ruin the table top, but if you were planning to get rid of it, maybe that doesn't matter.

ETA: I saw you mention that the base plates might not fully cover the table. Maybe you can do something like this picture? I want to do something similar because my son has a ton of the Cars Duplos and loves driving them, but the bace plates help him keep the things he builds sturdier so they don't fall over as easily (which really upsets him, especially if they break apart).

My son doesn't use the base plates for his own creations. He has some that came with sets and then I bought one of the big ones separately, but they never get used unless they're part of a kit.

Given my experience, I wouldn't bother with a dedicated table. He usually builds stuff on the floor. I guess the attraction of a table is that the unused pieces are off the ground (they hurt if you step on them!), but we solve that by insisting that he put the leftovers back into the bin before heading off to do something else. I have him do the kits on a tray or jelly roll pan so the pieces don't get lost.

I used to build entire towns with my Legos and blocks and later Barbie stuff on the floor of the playroom. I remember my mother asking if I was ever going to make it so it was possible to walk in there (I think she wanted to vacuum...), but I played with my towns all the time, and loved it! Being constrained by a table would've been a bummer.

@Eko: I love the storage with wheels idea. So clever!

@Bao: I'm more concerned about the price of those baseplates. We were planning to get rid of our old coffee table, but those baseplates are expensive and I'll need at least 6 and it won't cover everything.

The round Lego table is super cute, but when the time comes we will probably convert our Trofast storage into a Lego table. I love the idea of all in one table & storage.

We used two of these from Ikea to make something like the bottom. LO just pulls up an Ikea stool next to it. We made a top for it that isn't permanently attached so we can use it side by side for other purposes if we ever want to.

I made one just like the first one. $5 thrift store table and then a large baseplate. So it was less than $20 total.

We did a tray table version (like the kind for breakfast in bed) where the legs fold up. We can tuck it away or move any creations out of reach of the baby really easily.

This is what we did. I would chose the first option and get a crate and put caster wheels on it so it's storage you can roll out from underneath the table.

I say go with practical since kids are much more comfortable than adults with sitting on their knees and such. I don't know that the base plates are necessary. I guess it depends on what is being built. So far we have repurposed a train table as a Lego table.

We've now entered the era of Legos. I'm thinking about repurposing an old coffee table, but I'm worried about wasting Lego baseplates. I'm also wondering if having a table she can actually sit under is better than a closed table (she can push a chair next to).

Which type of table is better? Or does your LO prefer to build without an attached base? In which case, I can save $ on the baseplates :grin:

Poll added.
