I was hoping to come back and posted completed pictures, but who knows when that will actually happen :/

I still need to make a fridge door (there was a tinted glass door, but it swung open and shattered into a million pieces when we were moving it upstairs), get a faucet, hang the 'window', add a hook for her apron, add baskets to the top for toy storage, and get a push light for the oven.

Make sure to test that the sides can support the whole unit, the bottoms of those are usually stronger to support the weight at the base.

I would ditch the top shelf area if you cant flip it on its side.

Just goes to show how much I actually pay attention to my pins, ha! I can't wait to see the finished product!

@looch: Yeah, they'd probably end up being my storage because by the time she got tall enough she probably wouldn't be interested in a play kitchen anymore.

@Smurfette: Yes, I think counter space is probably the most important!

Gotta say I'm a little impressed with myself :) Alright, which one do you think looks more fun for a kid?

The one on the left takes up more floor space, but that's not much of a problem. She'd also be able to use more of it. More counter space. Storage would be the 'freezer' and the cupboard in the top right corner. Skinnier fridge. I think this version has less structural modifications, but they're both pretty minimal.

The one on the right takes up less floor space and has more storage (the whole top row of cupboards). She'd have access to fridge AND freezer, but loose the extra counter space and misc shelves on bottom. We'd have to build that whole shelf and microwave in the body of the kitchen, and the shelving would likely be storage - I don't think she'd be able to reach it for a long time.

[attach=3446/14/neoksl.450x600.IMG_3527.JPG]

ETA: Try not to laugh too hard at my lazy attempt at perspective ;)

I've pretty much been set on making my kids' play kitchen since I first saw the idea of re-purposing an old entertainment center. We were handed down one from a family member, and we're pretty handy, so why not.
The only 'problem' is that it's huge!! This top shelf is tall enough that no kid will ever be able to reach it while still interested in playing with a play kitchen. My 2 year old will *just* be able to reach the stove top and counter space.

What would you do - chop off the top shelf and be done with it, or turn it into some kind of storage? Maybe put doors on it to make it look like kitchen cabinets?

Also, the glass door is the sensible spot for the fridge - extend the fridge down to the shelf below it, or have a short fridge with a... dishwasher/oven/cabinet underneath it?

Also, if you have any favorite diy play kitchens, show pics!!
