I've made them, but a red tutu for Halloween for E is $6 on Amazon, so I'm just going to buy them :)

@PinkElephant: I have only seen pastel colors at target online right now- will double check though. Gymboree has 50% off the skirts online right now so I might swing by the store today and check them out. I don't mind if they are less puffy if it means she can actually rewear it. I hate spending much money on something that gets worn two or three times.

Target and Walmart both have very cheap but decent looking "Just one You" by Carters options online (I've ordered them for various costumes). The gymboree tutu skirts are excellent quality, but ours are more skirt like than tutu like (ie not super puffy/stiff).

I think you all have convinced me- just buy it! Hopefully the Gymboree one goes on more sale since that looks perfect and could be reused, like lawbee said. And I can find some cheap orange tights I think.

The ones I made were easy, but tulle isn't cheap. It will probably cost at least $20 to make a decent one by the time you get the tulle and ribbon. Buying might be cheaper!

@Foodnerd81: Yeah the non glitter tulle was $3 a roll plus I bought the ribbon (but I used the tulle to make the lights for the stop light too). I think if you can get one for $16 that is probably saner--the one I made was red/yellow/green so I don't think I could have found it in a store!

I made a tutu for H's costume last year. I sewed mine and it was six layers of tulle, which made for a nice, fluffy tutu. If I didn't have a sewing machine, I would buy one.

As for buying them, you definitely get what you pay for. Cheap tutus (like the ones that come from Party City) look cheap.

Made one for DD1's 1st birthday. It took a couple hours (I think?) but I did it while watching TV like others have said. I like how it turned out. I used one roll of tulle that I bought on Amazon.

Thanks for the input. I'm leaning towards buying- I can get one for under $16, @MamaCate: which is sounds like yours cost anyway.

@Chillybear: no sewing machine. I can hand sew a little bit lack patience.

i made one for LO's halloween costume last year (she was a stop light). I bought 4 rolls of tulle from Michaels ($4/roll) and just tied it onto a ribbon. It didn't take that long once I got the hang of it--the only part that was a pain was that it was glitter tulle so the glitter was everywhere!!

If you want to make one i can try to find the website I used--a quick review didn't turn it up but i am sure i can dig it up somewhere.

we make tutus at my office.... It usually takes about 4 yards of tulle to get a nice full skirt. We use a special sewing machine that "pleats" the tulle. I prefer the look of organza over a netted tulle and you dont need as much yardage maybe 3 yards instead. do you have a sewing machine?

It didn't take her long to make it...but if it was me it probably would've taken me forever! :P it was beautiful and very full!

This reminds me to get on DD1's DT costume! @Foodnerd81: I'm going to price watch that hoodie! I think she will love it! 😝

I made a few of those tutus. It's a fun and quick project - I do it while watching TV. There's a lot of different ways to do it. What I do: I buy a few rolls of tulle, grab a book or magazine and wind all the fabric around it, cut, then tie each piece on a elastic band on one of those tall toilet paper rolls with a stuffed animal attached. It's super easy and looks great in pictures.

However, I prefer buying a cheap one online (that's a whole skirt) for everyday wear. They're more durable and won't get messed up as easily.

I guess maybe it depends on what you want it to look like - some tutus look great without a ton of tulle, but some of them require a crapload of tulle. I've made LO a bunch of tutus and they were super easy (made them while watching tv) and didn't cost that much, because I bought rolls of tulle on sale.

Has anyone made one of those no sew tutus you see on Pinterest? Do they come out nice, or just... Really homemade looking? Any real life photos? How much tulle do you end up needing to make it fluffy and is it even cheaper than a cheap one online?

Or, suggestions on where to buy an inexpensive little tutu for a toddler Halloween costume? I think C may go as a tiger- I found this tiger hoodie in the boys section at Crazy 8, thinking of that with black leggings and an orange, black, or orange and black tutu to make it clearer that she is in fact a girl.
