@spaniellove: we had a ton of success with neocate splash after 1 year old. It was expensive but he needed the fats (he was failure to thrive). And we didn't have a problem weaning from it at 2 years old.

My daughter was still nursing then, but even had she not been, I would not have likely pushed it. I wouldn't worry about it unless you're worried about your kid getting too little protein or calcium, or just calories.

@spaniellove: what about soy? M drinks almond milk but still requires 10 oz of formula (we do isomil) to make sure he gets enough fat.

@Mrs. Twine: I'm not ready to chance it with any form of dairy in the near future because one exposure a while back led to a month and a half of projectile vomiting.

Since he's on Alimentum right now I might switch to Neocate Jr initially and maybe I'll try hemp milk like @yin: recommended, just to have an option that doesn't break the bank since we'd like to stop paying a fortune for hypoallergenic formula.

My LO is allergic to dairy, and he is a picky eater. He is also allergic to 6+ other foods. I decided to transition him to hemp milk after he turned 1. I sometimes worry about his nutrition, and the hemp milk reassures me that he is getting enough calcium (and lots of other vitamins too).

@spaniellove: Can he do any dairy, like yogurt, or does he need to avoid all dairy? Neither Ellie nor Lorelei ever drank milk, but we do eat a fair amount of dairy and so I didn't worry too much. Obviously there are lots of other ways to meet those nutritional needs without dairy. I would just try to make sure that you are including foods rich in calcium and vitamin D in his diet, and ask the pediatrician if you need any additional ideas. It was a pain in the butt when Ellie was in public school and wouldn't drink milk. But since he has an allergy you shouldn't have that issue.

LO just wouldn't drink milk or milk alternatives. She drinks plenty of water, and gets all of her nutrition elsewhere, and the doctor said that was totally fine!

Our pediatrician told us it was fine for DS to not have it as long as he was getting enough fat and calcium from other sources.

As long as he's getting the required nutrition from other items then it's fine. My biggest concern would be calcium with how much they are still growing.

So when you stop feeding formula/offering bottles at 1 year old...is switching to milk a must or can they just go without it? LO is allergic to dairy and I'm allergic to some of the substitutes (almond, coconut). Is having milk so important that he should get it in any form or is it okay if he just likes water?
