@MsMini: good point! It seems unlikely that a kid gets thrown but the sign stays on.

I have to say, though, when people drive like an idiot around me, I want to yell I HAVE BABIES!!

First responders look for carseats in cars, not signs. I'd also be concerned that they could bring attention to infants like those new baby signs and stork figures people stopped using because they alerted people looking to steal babies to the presence of a new baby

They always make me think of this. But really, I just give people with those signs a little more grace if they're driving really slowly. I also am a little more cautious around them. Not because I worry about me hitting a car with a baby, but because they're more likely to suddenly be distracted by trying to turn and soothe baby or something!

I don't think they do anything.

And the first responder thing seems weird to me. You would think that the carseat would be a pretty good clue without needing a sign...not that it matters since that isn't what the sign is actually for anyways, but still.

And more importantly, who actually takes the sign down when their LO isn't in the car? I doubt very few do!

Even if most people don't give a ish (or maybe they already drive perfectly), I am super extra "more" careful and understanding (like if they're driving a little slower I won't think they're an idiot, moron etc) when I see that sign on a car . And again I'll "get it" and not judge

It's not to encourage caution. It is to notify people in the case of an accident that there is someone unable of escaping on their own so they can look for the child and rescue them

No, they will not look for it, If it is there and they see it, great, but I drive my car with out LO all the tome and if I had said sign on window.... they would be looking for a LO that thankfully wasn't there? The packages on these states it is to alert drivers of your baby in the car and drive with caution.

I asked a cop and a firefighter if they look for those signs, and they laughed and said "no". There are a million other things that they would look for, or notice before a sign that would most likely be thrown off of a window in a serious accident anyways.

I have been curious about the first responder thing -- would be interested to hear from a first responder. I would think it's not something they look for, or potentially couldn't see (wrecked car, sign could fly off, etc). It would be the only reason I would acknowledge the validity of the signs. Otherwise they just bug me because the drivers tend to be the dangerously slow drivers hahahah. Sorry to be cynical -- I have a long commute ;-)

They have zero impact on my driving, but they seem to impact the driving of those with the signs as they are often the worst drivers out on the road.

ETA: I don't know about the first responder thing - if you have a car seat in the car, that's the big tip off for people to look for children.

I think it was just a couple years ago that I first learned that people used them to encourage other drivers to be more cautious. It had never occurred to me that that might be the goal. I always thought it was just a way for parents to brag about their kids, like those stick figure families people put on their rear windshields.
