Yes, usually you need to move up bedtime by 30-60 mins, even temporarily until they can spend longer stretches awake. 5 months seems a little early to me to drop a nap and spend more than 2/2.5 hours awake. BUT if there's one thing I've learned its that every baby is different and the best thing to do is listen to their cues and your instincts :-)
This article helped me a lot in figuring out naps by age (but again, this is a guideline for most babies, not all!)

I have another about the transition to two naps specifically so I'll look for it!

That last nap was only like 30 minutes so once he dropped it we just bumped his bedtime a little earlier but within 2 weeks he was able to stay awake until his regular bedtime again.

It did for both my girls. Had to move it like 30-60 minutes earlier.

Hello all,

My LO just turned 5 months and is still doing 3 naps a day, however sometimes it is hard to get her to sleep for that third nap so I am wondering if she is dropping it.

Her bedtime is late...starts around 8-8:30pm with bath, bottle, then we put her in crib with pacifier. She sleeps through the night until 6am, wakes up to eat, then I put her back in the crib and she sleeps until 8-9am. Her naps (depending on previous wake times) are around 10-11am, 2-3pm, and 4-5pm.

I really like the late bedtime because it means I get to see her for a few hours when I come home from work, and also I'm worried if I put her to bed earlier, she might wake up to eat at 4 or 5am which I definitely don't want. But I'm wondering if she transitions to 2 naps, will it be necessary to move the bedtime earlier?

TIA
