@Andrea: That would be awesome! They do have random bands around for entertainment all throughout the race. Anything from country to bag pipes.

@Andrea: Lol, no real turkeys. Just a person with a big turkey costume on usually, and lots of the racers will dress up like turkeys, or wear turkey hats, etc. It's a race on Thanksgiving morning. We always just do the mile walk, it starts up the street from my mom's house and goes to the high school. And then after my mom has a ton of people over for brunch.

@Andrea: Oh, that makes sense. I am having to give up one tradition because of LO. Every year on thanksgiving we stay at my parents because there's a turkey trot race around their neighborhood and all the roads are blocked off so it's hard to get there the day of. And then we get my favorite tradition- my mom plays the Rocky song to wake us up in the morning. But now that LO is here it's just too much to stay there. My family is soooo loud so it's hard to get them to stay quiet after her bed time, and there's just a crap load of people there because my whole family stays there. But I'll probably just start playing the song for LO to wake up to at our house instead.

@artbee: yes of course. that is why i used to visit pre-LO. but now, it is easier for my parents to come to new york and i don't feel the NEED to go to hawaii. there are no traditions tying me to hawaii in particular.

I love family traditions. Our family doesn't have many. But I am always a lil jealous when I hear about other family's traditions. We've slowly forced our families to incorporate them, and I think with us having children I'll be able to make them a part of our lives. I don't know that I'd feel closer to them with more traditioans, but I think they're a good way to bond.

@Andrea: but you have your family there. Isn't that enough to make you want to visit?

@artbee: that was my suspicion. my mom asks me why i don't care about visiting hawaii and i think it's because i don't have many traditions tied to hawaii/my childhood so being there or here in new york is really no different for me.

We're all about traditions. I think it brings us closer because we all love them so much that we don't want to miss things. So people are willing to fly in from all over for holidays and certain vacations.

Traditions for us has brought us closer as a family. Sure as a kid, they're a PIA, but as adults, I love them. With all of us growing up and doing our own things (and living far away), these traditions is something we can expect everyone to be there and get us a little hyped up to reconnect. Then again, it depends on your relationship with those family members.

Our family on both sides are pretty short of traditions and I'd say we're all so-so on the closeness department. So I'm curious to know if traditions have helped you forge close bonds with your family members? Or are the traditions sometimes a drag?
