Interesting update a week later. My doctor finally had my test results when I called this morning. Negative for everything so they told me to go to a urologist. I called my sister's doctor and the one my OB recommended, neither could see me for a month The second said I should just go to the ER because that's what they'd tell me to do anyway. So I spent 3 hours in the ER- not bad I know and had bloodwork, urine culture, bladder screen and an extensive ultrasound. The ultrasound found that I did have a kidney stone that was likely causing my pain. They told me to see a urologist tomorrow so that's my plan. Rough week of not feeling good but I'm glad I kept following up and I probably should have just gone to the ER sooner!

@yellowbird: I just got back from going in and giving a urine sample. I called a third time and really stressed that I had called first thing at the doctor's recommendation. The receptionist found me a nurse who said she'd ask a doctor. A different nurse called back an hour later and said I could come in anytime before 5.

I really don't like this but I've had mostly good experiences over the years and trusted the doctors with the birth of my first son. My next appointment is with my original doctor of 10 years so she knows I'm not a difficult patient. I plan to express my concerns and see what she says. My sister and friend go to another popular local OB practice and like them a lot. It would mean changing hospitals but the hospitals are equally good, so I'd be fine with either.

@MOMTOLITTLEB: I'd be unhappy. My last OB was similarly unresponsive (honestly, I barely talked with her, just the advice nurse). I switched and am much happier. If you're having doubts, no harm in looking around. But, I hope they take care of the issue at hand promptly!!

That would make me upset and distrustful of the doctor. My OB/GYN practice usually calls back within 15-20 minutes (even if you call overnight- they always have a nurse and an MD on call). I had a UTI when I was about 8-9 weeks pregnant and since it was late, they had me go into the ER just to make sure it wasn't anything more serious (otherwise they would have had me come in that day). They definitely would not recommend that I take anything without being seen.

I'm as laid back as they come and id be unhappy with the whole interaction. I wouldn't be comfortable taking an antibiotic without confirmed infection. Considering you're not feeling better, you should be seen asap because a UTI can turn very serious very quickly.

@junebugsmama: You make a good point, I'm actually not totally sure that's what it is. I did have one 6 months ago, this isn't exactly the same but similar symptoms and I had one in my last pregnancy but I forget how that was, I don't remember it being as painful. I did take an AZO home test but that doesn't tell you exactly what's wrong, just that there's an infection.

I also have a history of kidney stones and a sister who had kidney stones in her second pregnancy.

@Adira: @MrsSCB: Thanks, I feel like I am pretty reasonable, I understand they're busy. It makes me think of when my blood pressure spiked late in my last pregnancy and they had me come in right away when I complained of severe headaches. The doctor then sent me straight to maternity for induction. If they had done the same thing they're doing today, it could have been really dangerous. I get so upset about stuff like this, my baby is so little, I want to be careful.

@MrsSCB: agreed. I thought usually they don't assume you are correct unless you've had frequent utis and are confident that's what it is.

A UTI can be serious, especially when pregnant. I would be annoyed. When I messaged my OB saying I thought I might be getting one, the nurse called within 30 minutes and told me to come in that afternoon.

All doctor's offices are different, but I've never had to wait longer than an hour for a call-back at mine...

Sorry you're dealing with this. :(

I think that I have a UTI. I'm pregnant so I called my OB and she prescribed an antibiotic and told me to call the office on Monday if I wasn't feeling better. I'm still feeling awful and called first thing this morning to leave a message for the nurse. They still haven't called back over 3 hours later so I called the receptionist and she said I can expect a call back by the end of the day unless I'm in labor. I don't know if the nurse will tell me to come in for a checkup or wait a few more days but either way I'd like to make sure. There is the possibility it could be more serious than a UTI and since I'm pregnant that concerns me.

This almost makes me want to change doctors because I'm sure I'll have other questions or issues during the pregnancy. I've been a patient for 10 years. I'm happy to wait for a call back but a full day seems excessive. Besides that, if they call late, I'm obviously not getting in today. I'm really surprised but maybe I'm sensitive and irritable because I don't feel well?
