@travellingbee: i've heard of babies doing that! maybe try some finger foods and see if he likes to take charge with those more? or make the oatmeal super chunky so he could pick it up?

@scg00387: no because for some weird reason he refuses to eat unless I feed him. Weird lazy baby. I will keep trying to get him to do it. (He also doesn't like to hold his bottle and just started putting pacifier in his own mouth consistently)

Is he feeding himself the oatmeal? If he is in control of the eating I wouldn't worry about over-feeding and let him figure out his hungry/full signals on his own. From my personal experiences with babies that are spoon-fed, they gobble quicker. We load the spoon and then give it to LO if it's something like yogurt or oatmeal and he sets the pace. But that's just my philosophy :)

DS is def an eater and is the same way. I usually just let him lead the way. Although for dinner I have stopped when I think it's ridiculously too much and don't want him too full at bedtime.

@Smurfette: @travellingbee: It must be a March baby thing at the moment, because Finn is the same way. I LOVE it since we have so many feeding struggles with him. He ate the whole Gerber container (2.5 oz.) at daycare yesterday, and then at dinner he finished his apple container which was about half full and threw a fit when I didn't give him more. I gave him some green beans I had nearby and he went to town on that, too, but I cut him off after a few bites because I wanted him to eat a full bottle in another hour or so. My philosophy is whatever I can get down the kid without it drastically reducing the amount of milk he's drinking is a-okay with me. :)

I would let him eat until he is full. It really evens out . . . one day it is a container--or 3!-- of purees, and other days is it half a container and a few Puffs. *shrug* I just follow LO's lead. :)

@oliviaoblivia: Sometimes I genuinely get freaked out at the amount of food DD can consume. It's amazing...ly freakish.

My LO was/is the same way, and we cut her off. She just LOVES to eat "real" food, but I get worried that her mind isn't having time to tell her tummy she's full! I will give her a sippy cup to play with to distract her!

R is the same way! I buy ours but she eats a 2.5oz Gerber container and gets pissed when it is done. Starts crying. I usually give her a sippy cup and the spoon to play with and she calms down. She does the same thing at day care when they give her "lunch". She can't be hungry still, cause she is still eating her bottles at the same time and as much and that was all she was getting a month ago.

My DS used cry when he was done eating too. :) some kids are just bigger/better eaters than others. At 6 months with DS, I would cut him off after 4 ounces of solids, but I did boost his number of meals to 3 per day because he was crying after every meal. Within a month or so, I also added in two finger food snacks a day (very small portions) and at about 8 months we started moving away from purees altogether. By 8/9 months he was eating mostly finger foods for 3 meals and 2 snacks a day and he learned to self-regulate (most of the time). He's just always been a big eater (even though he's way down on the scale for weight) so I let him keep eating until he's no longer interested.

I talked with our pedi about this and he said to feed them until they refuse or stop eating. I'm constantly shocked at how much lo eats but she has actually backed off her growth curve in weight a little bit. She ate more for dinner then I did yesterday!

If you are breastfeeding (and at daycare offering bottles) before he eats solids, I would just let him go. The boy obviously likes his solid food and wants more! At that age, I think they stop when they're full...they don't just eat to eat because it tastes good.

Yes I breast-feed him before he eat solids. He BF about a half an hour before eating solids yesterday. Which is why I think he just like the taste. Clearly, he wasn't just hungry. They tell me at school that he cries when his solid food is done as well. What a piggy I have!

If it were me, I would have cut him off, too. My DD is 2 years old and sometimes I have to cut her off because sometimes I know that she likes how something tastes and will just keep eating until she feels sick.

Do you breastfeed (or bottle feed, whatever you do) him first before you give him solids? If you give milk first it may lower his appetite enough for him not to go nuts on the oatmeal! :)

My six month old is obsessed with solid foods right now. I don't know what a portion size is. I asked my doctor and she said, it depends on the baby. So my question is, do I let him eat as much as he wants? Yesterday I made three batches of oatmeal and at the end he was still acting like he was starving. I cut him off, because that just seems ridiculous to make more. Should I just let him keep eating if he wants to keep eating? He's clearly not actually starving, since he gets plenty of breastmilk. ,I think he just really like the taste!
