DS was a fan of them as a baby. He used it to help him sleep. I just wish I had bought a mobile that used an a/c adaptor and could play longer than the 15 minute cycle. Once it stopped, DS would wake.

@Espion: Haha, I've been on the other end of that where I preferred someone else's wording to mine many times! But yeah it's just one of those things where pre-baby it's like, "Ooh, so pretty! Who needs one of those gaudy loud light up things?" Then baby gets here and it changes to, "Oh...okay, I get it now." LOL. I'm sure there are exceptions out there, but my son was not one of them!

I would get a regular mobile - and that's coming from someone who spent months oohing and ahhing over the Etsy ones. They are quite pretty...but they're also totally useless. The regular mobiles and soothers are great for baby to watch as they're falling asleep, transitioning to the crib, learning to self soothe, etc. The Sleep Sheep is just not the same thing - it's just for white noise, my son really needed something to look at to help soothe himself to sleep. If you decide to go with an Etsy one just for the pretty factor, I would recommend getting a soother that straps to the crib (like an aquarium-style one or something)that is actually functional.

We got the Fisher Price mobile that would make Etsy shrivel up and die. And E loved it. I never decorated a nursery, because I didn't feel like decorating a room for my benefit. If it was a matter of decor, I never would have gotten one. But for something that I don't mind giving away/tossing in a couple years? It was totally worth it.

ETA: This isn't intended to sound harsh, but may come off that way. I love everyone's nurseries. :)

I bought some special mobiles that are designed to catch baby's interest and help her develop concentration (so not really for soothing). They're pretty simple and do not play music or have any motors.

My in laws gave us a Tiny Love musical one, and I was meh about it at first because I hadn't planned on mobile at all but our LO loveeeed it.

We didn't use it for sleep (I think it's too stimulating) but from a young age it would keep her totally entranced for about a full 30 minutes, so I was able to shower, dry my hair, and dress without her crying.

We just recently took it down and she's 10 months!

So now, I'd say only get it if it's functional and moves and plays music.

I would have said no, and that it's just for aesthetics. But, at 5 or 6 months, LO really started to fight naps and I started to turn it on after I put her in her crib. It gave her something to look at and not be quite so crazy. It was a bit amazing. And it only runs for 3 minutes, so I wasn't worried about her becoming dependant on it.

i don't think its necessary, but i will say that LO absolutely loved the mobile we had for her. it was the tiny love jungle sweet island dreams mobile

http://www.amazon.com/Tiny-Love-Island-Dreams-Mobile/dp/B00198PQHY

the way they designed the movement of the mobile was really clever. so the actual mobile turns and the animals also turn based on where they are in the mobile cycle. the video will let you see what i mean. LO would lay there for a good half an hour, completely mesmerized from the ages of 3-6 months. it was really darn cute.

I got mine for decorative purposes only. LO slept in a bassinet in our room for almost 6 months. Then after he transitioned to crib with mobile, it was just a couple of months later that we had to take it down because he learned to stand and cruise he would try to pull it down!

We have a simple one and put it above our changing pad instead of the crib, and it was a good choice for us. It distracts her while she's being changed, which is nice, and it's not too flashy.

This is ours (from wee gallery).

Ours was totally amazing. At about 6 weeks, e would lay there for an hour, happy and content to watch the animals tinkle around. I could fold clothes, start laundry, make breakfast....so so worth it. I got ours used at a garage sale for $15. Also a crib soother for $15 that she STILL loves at 13 months.

Not a necessity by any means! The sound mobiles have all sucked and stopped working in my experience. We have a non-sound one hanging over the changing table, and that always catches both boys attention.

Putting the music on is R's signal that it's bedtime. I think she could live without it now at 10 months old but it definitely helped teach her to fall asleep in her crib on her own.

I haven't really found them to be necessary with the kids I have taken care of. One older baby though feel in love with one of those crib aquarium things that hangs on the side and after many failed attempts at sleep training that's what helped him figure out how to self soothe. He would turn it on even if he woke in the middle of the night and put himself back to sleep. So my vote is buy a cute one if you want it, consider a lights and music one if you need another tool in your sleep toolbox.

We have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008KG5R6I/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1399927841&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40

It's not necessarily a mobile, but it plays music/white noise and can project moving pictures on the ceiling. You can use the music and projection separately. I couldn't find a non-musical mobile I liked and I wanted a sound machine so I thought this was a good compromise. We haven't used the projections yet but the "ocean" setting is used for all naps/nighttime sleep.

I voted nice to have... for small window it was great for us because it kept LO entertained for 10 minutes in his crib while I run and take a shower. Once he started standing up in his crib, you can bet your bottom dollar the thing he wanted most was to grab that mobile and tear it down or swing on it and we promptly put in the closet. :)

ours is just decorative, I ordered it on etsy to go with her nursery, which was fun. I really loved it when we got it. I can't say she was at all into it as a baby. now as a 2-year-old she still has it (just moved it up some) and likes to tell me what all the animals are. if you're getting it for "functional" purposes I'd wait to see if you have a good sleeper or not.

But we also had a Sleep Sheep passed onto us so we have some other way to make music/white noise for LO. I'm just not a fan of the way the regular mobiles look.

I was rather annoyed because my mom gifted it and I have never heard of such a thing... not sure if there is a Chinese superstition? Anyone get this from their Asian/Chinese relatives?

We had a simple mobile that did nothing for our son. Daycare had a mobile with music and movement and lights and he loves to stare at it as he falls asleep. So we got rid of our purely decorative one and got a functional one. The lights and music are generally soothing, not jarring.
