I have one (a set) and love it.

My mom insisted we wouldn't use it a lot and that it was silly, but we use it all the time. We got a neutral one and have used it in two different nurseries.

Didn't use one with DS1 for the first 8 months as we lived in a tiny place with no room for it. We nursed in my bed (I had a great comfortable headboard) or on the couch. He preferred being bounced on a yoga ball rather than rocked so we did that. I had one with DS2 as we moved to a bigger house with each kid in their own rooms. But if space in an issue, I don't think it's necessary at all.

I have a cheap rocker in each of the kids rooms. Basically a place to sit with them if they get up at night. But when they still were our room I nursed in bed and much preferred it. Way more comfy. I would skip it and then when you move have a chair if you want so you'll have a place to sit for motn wake ups once they are in their own room.

I loved our glider. We did our bedtime routine in it until the day it broke (it was secondhand and OLD) and I miss it every day now that I am pregnant with DD2. H still wants to be held and I just can't hold her for very long. I don't think that the ottoman is necessary. We never used ours.

I have an IKEA rocker in L's nursery, but since he isn't sleeping there yet, it really isn't used. Nursing didn't work out for us, but when we were still trying we were more successful in a laying down position anyways. Right now I just prop some pillows up to give him his bottle.

What you truly NEED is very, very little, so keep that in mind when it comes to baby gear. There are things that make life easier, but widely varies from family to family, baby to baby.

We bought a used Dutalier glider and received a bargain glider from Amazon as a gift. There's no comparing the two (although both are no things of beauty). The biggest pro of the Dutalier is the recline feature. I don't use the ottoman that much, so I would tell someone to skip if it's an additional cost.

I love my glider for night feeds (LO is in our room in her own crib) but I've never wished for an ottoman and I've nurses two babies. So I would do a glider without an ottoman and save the space.

@stiletto_mom: we were in a similar situation, LO was in our room when she was born for about a year. I thought I didnt need a glider, but I was wrong. After she was born I went and bought this one from walmart and 4 years later its still going strong. It was a really good deal too. Feeding her in the glider and ottoman is so much more comfortable than sitting up in your bed. the rocking motion is also soothing.

I didn't have one at home but used a standard wooden glider with padded arms at church often and hated it. It was not comfortable. One of my friends had a rocking/gliding recliner. If I had money to spend that's what I would get for lo#2.

Nursing in bed was never comfortable for me so I used the rocking chair all the time. It's still a big part of our bedtime at 16 months. It really saved me, sitting up in bed was also not my favorite. I am so glad we a spent money on it, but it's hard to know if you will like it until you need it.

I kinda wish I had one because I have used other peoples before to nurse in and they are great....

However, DD2 will share a smallish bedroom with her sister so we are going to skip buying one. I used a regular rocking chair with a boppy as the seat cushion and propped my feet up in a bookshelf with DD1 and we were fine so I will do that again. I had lots of pillows on the bed and the couch as well so we could move around and be comfy all over the house.

My first baby didn't have a good latch so I needed a supportive chair to help her position well and get her latched but by the time she was 3-4 months old I could feed her anywhere so the chair got flicked (it was just an old old armchair). Number two was a much better feeder so I just fed him on the bed.

TL:DR - if you're short on space then I'd give the chair and ottoman a miss!

We used our rocker a TON for a solid 2 years. Rocking to sleep, rocking when sick; rocking comforted LO in ways laying/sitting on a bed couldn't.

We had ours in the livingroom - is that an option, or do you literally only have 1 room to share? It's not a necessity, but ours was totally one of our top used items

I sort of wish we had gotten one. While LO was still sleeping on our room, I just nursed on our bed, but once we moved her into her room, I nursed in an arm chair and it wasn't that comfy. Seriously considering getting a smaller set for LO2. We barely have room but I think it may be worth it. I nursed LO1 for over 2 years so I would have gotten a lot of use out of it.

We used a swivel rocker with DD and I love it! DH and I spent so many hours with her in this chair. We still sit together to read sometimes and she is 3! We didn't have an ottoman, but sometimes used a stool to put our feet up. For DS, I just a glider/recliner secondhand. DH and I are really excited to recline!!!

I bought a rocker/recliner and I love it, I couldn't have gotten by without it. We slept with the baby in it for the first month, I use it for all the night nursings, and occasionally through the day. Now that he's bigger we use it at bedtime to read stories and to cuddle when he wakes up grumpy. We use it so often that instead of moving it into the nursery for baby #2 we bought a new one.

I wish we could fit our glider in the bedroom. It didn't fit in the nursery for our first, and now the baby sleeps in our room and it doesn't fit in here. So for both I have mostly nursed sitting up in bed at night, and in the glider in the living room or couch during the day. In your situation I would say it's not necessary but I do wish i could sit in it to nurse in here. It's a lot more comfortable than sitting up in the bed for me.

Side lying nursing didn't work for the first few months when the baby couldn't really hold her head much and now I just do it in the morning (which I do love).

I barely used mine in the beginning (and we got a rocking recline) I love it but I think I love it because it's the best option in the nursery if that makes sense. Especially in the early days we spent most of our time in bed or on the couch. I'd say we used it a lot from 4-12 months and now at 20 months we use it a few times a week. It's worth noting that we have a floor bed in the nursery so we frequently appeal sprawl on that instead of using the chair, if we didn't have the floor bed we'd use the chair several times a day.

I do think it's necessary. As a doctor I see a lot of patients with pain related to poor ergonomics with nursing! You might side lie sometimes, but I don't think you'll want to be in bed 100% of the time. Plus it's so nice to have rocking to sleep as part of the bedtime routine. Also on the early weeks getting in and out of bed was painful for me due to perineal pain and the rocking chair was basically my "station" throughout the day.
We have a ticket and used a nursing stool in early days; we never used an ottoman.
