Ohio winter has been horrible. Plus little one was in daycare and had a constant cold. It helped keep his airways moist. When we didn't use it he'd have horrible bloody noses. We use the crane drop. It doesn't have a filter. You are supposed to clean it every few days with vinegar and water. Then it went away and we never actually opened the thing until a couple weeks ago (at 13 months!). It has helped a lot with that. One tip- I bought the highest rated one on amazon. One of the reasons I bought it was because it didn't have a filter and people complained about others that the filters were expensive. What I didn't realize was that if you don't have a filter you have to rinse it out daily and wash it with vinegar once a week.
