Sounds to me like your little guy might be ready to move past purees. We are surprised sometimes how much LO eats and we chatted with our doctor about it at her one year appt. She said as long as we were ok when she didn't eat well, then to just let her eat what she wants. We just focus on feeding her a variety of good foods - proteins, fruit, veggies, cheese, yogurt and while we do give her carbs like puffs, crackers, rice, etc, they are not a staple for any meal.

The doctor's office did send home some guidelines though to start with a tablespoon of protein, veggie and fruit and then add more as needed. I think you should try backing off purees and giving just the finger foods since it seems like your LO likes being able to feed himself and enjoys this food better. That might make it seem like he's eating less too, although when you cut it all up and put it on a tray, it does look like an alarming amount. haha!

no real advice except that my LO didn't seem to have an off switch at that age, either! :) I just cut him off when it seemed like he had enough.... (vague, i know...)

BUT, closer to one year he for sure knows when he's full and will indicate that he's had enough :)

@thenetexan: I should clarify that the eating until throwing up only happens with bananas. He hates them but loves eating with his hands so he'll eat, gag and then throw up whatever he ate before the bananas. This has only happened a few times because I keep hoping he'll start liking bananas, they say a baby will need to try something several times before deciding if they like it. I have since stopped giving him bananas.

@septmomma12: thanks! I think I maybe need to change the way I feed him. I usually give him purées first and then finger foods (usually cut up fruits, sometimes puffs) to practice his pincer grip, so I think he figures it's a whole new activity? Like how dessert is a separate stomach for adults(me) ?

I had a post similar to this a few weeks ago. My 10 month old is insatiable. (He's a big boy too - 100% for height, 75% for weight.) Since we started solids, I have had to "guess" how much to give him at each meal because he will just keep eating and eating. Especially once he moved to finger foods. I think they are fun for them, so why stop something that's fun? So I don't have much advice, but I can tell you that just within the last week or two (starting about 10 months), he appears to be setting limits - has not finished all his meals for the first time ever. So maybe the thrill of the finger foods eventually wears off?

My LO is an eater and had similar percentiles at that age. I would limit things that were less nutritious. So, mainly I limited breads and pastas. He did not and still does not get carb snacks like cheerios and goldfish. *our snacks are usually fruit and milk or cheese or veggies and hummus). He can eat as much fruit and vegetables as he wants. He also loves protein and I rarely limit it. At that age though, I did not limit protein. My pediatrician always said that if he was not throwing up, he was not eating too much. If your LO is eating to the point of throwing up, you should talk with your pediatrician.

@MamaChin: my 8 month old can also put back a serious amount of food. I would probably just offer a smaller amount, let him finish, give him a break, and then offer more. So don't really limit his in take but give his body time to realize when he's full.

I wouldn't limit a baby. I would offer less more often. So feeding more slowly so he can learn his full feeling (which he has because he does turn down milk). It sounds like the finger foods are more of the issue. They are yummy and sweet and if you had all the chocolate in the world you would eat until you absolutely couldn't. So that you can offer less.

He spit up food in his bath and only drank 3oz before bed. Guess he ate too much solids. =\

N is almost 9 months and eats solids 3x a day. He used to just eat 3 ounces a meal plus some puffs, but since we've weaned and he started crawling he's been insatiable! He eats about 6oz a meal and will eat any finger food you give him. He hates bananas but will eat them until he throws up. Tonight he ate 6oz of purée, 3 cubes of tofu from our dinner and 3 baby rice cakes. I cut him off after that because I'm not sure he knows when he is full? He will pull off the bottle when he doesn't want any more milk and will turn his head when he's had enough purée. But he has not ever refused finger food. Should I limit him? If it helps N is 86% for weight and 56% for height.
