I didn't need them. The carseat was checked at the counter and they put it in a bag. For our umbrella stroller I used one of the bags that come with those foldable chairs you take camping. It was free since I already had it, and I just put the stroller in it right before gate checking it.

I have padded travel bags for both my umbrella stroller and car seat - they do not handle luggage very carefully and I want to take as many precautions so that my gear gets back to me in good condition. LO is 14 months and we've flown 3 times with her so far - so I know they'll get good use.

@IcebergMom: literalol!! Omg I have become my worst nightmare of myself. Remember when you were a kid and you swore you'd never be as embarrassing as your parents? Now I totally am. Oops.

I never did. Just make sure to take off your cup holders and anything that detaches - I did not, and of course I lost them.

We got one for our umbrella stroller and one for our carseat (got both used) and I'm so glad we did. They both had giant black oil stains on them when we got them back. That would have gotten on our carseat and stroller, and both of them are really nice and expensive.

ETA: we stored both in the basket of the stroller, then when we got to the gate we used them both all the way down to the plane. Then right before we got on the plane we folded up the stroller and put both items in the bags. It was really easy and took about 30 extra seconds. The bags are HUGE so you just unfold and slip the items in, and pull the drawstring.

@kiddosc: The thick contractor bag is amazing!

We also make sure our stuff is in a bag. We use the cheap red JR bag for the stroller so we can carry it to the plane. I remember posting something similar a while back and someone said it's sooo dirty in there.

We just flew with our carseat and used a large, thick contractor garbage bag to put our carseat in at the gate. We double bagged it and it came back with the first bag ripped, so I'm glad that we had it in something.

I just returned our gate check bag because we never ended up using it on any of our flights this summer. Honestly, we are always so frazzled as we get on a flight that we are never organized enough to get the stroller into it's bag. We've taken it on 8 flights and haven't had any problems. If it's raining out, the stroller will get a little wet as it is unloaded off the plane, but I'm usually just so thankful so that we've arrived at our destination that I barely notice!

@mjane: lol your post made me laugh! And I think the garbage bag is a brilliant idea!

Airline has always provided plastic bags at gate check, but I always bring a big old trash bag in case they don't. Bc classy is my middle name.

I just flew today with my 12 week old and I used a cheap bag for the car seat and no bag for the stroller frame. Pros and cons:

Pros, the car seat came back clean and the stroller frame (not in a bag ) came back with gunk on it.

Cons : flying solo with a baby and wearing them while trying to put the car seat and base in the bag on the gangway, with people pushing past you to get on the plane was a total PITA. But if you are traveling with your hubs , it should be no problem.

The airline did not provide me with a bag of any kind (I flew delta).

The first time we flew, we used a bag for our stroller and bought a seat for the carseat. When we arrived at our destination, it was raining. Everyone's gear was wet. I would not count on the airline to offer a bag. We were quite thankful to have a dry carseat and stroller!

Tbh, after seeing a video of car seats being thrown around by the luggage loader I don't think a bag makes a difference. :( I would use the seat on the plane.

Ditto to what @meganmp said. Every time except one we baggage checked the car seat, and the airline has always provided a bag for the seat. Then we just carry LO through the airport.

We didn't! Made it easy to find them because they were in the thick clear plastic the airline provides. We didn't gate check, either- car seats and stroller got checked at baggage check, and we carried the kids through security in carriers.
