We have the Ikea poang rocking chair and we are looking to get a better upholstered chair now that we're expecting our second. I had to make sure to have extra blankets on the arms for cushioning because ds hit his head all the time. The blankets can be dangerous too...I almost slipped on them several times because they fall off as you try to get up. One time it fell off and when dh went in during the night he did slip and hurt his back on another hard part of the chair on the way down. It was so bad we thought maybe he cracked a rib. Luckily he is ok now and ds didn't get hurt but its just been enough that we will spend the money to get something better this time.

I use my Dhs grandmothers old rocker.,, like you , all the gliders I like are all $$$. The rocker is fine, I use it daily but it's not supremely comfy.

I wonder if my daughter would be able to handle a $$$ rocker because she cannot handle being held while anyone sits down with her. Our alternative to the rocker is an exercise ball, but it's certainly not for nursing!

we didn't have anything for the first 7 months of my daughters life, because...no space. I mean, we have a yoga ball and when she wouldn't nap I could bounce on that. Now we have a cheap ikea arm chair that rocks a little bit, so I can sit in it when I nurse her at night.
I used a friend's glider for nursing once and it was so so so comfortable. A chair designed for nursing, I tell you.
I will totally be getting one for number 2.

All that to say- there is very little that you NEED. And if you don't have it, you make due. You could always wait and see. Amazon prime is a beautiful thing.

I have a family heirloom wooden rocking chair too :) it got some use for sure, but isn't very comfy. A pillow to sit on was a must!
We skipped a glider and survived. The rocker was nice to have, but we got way more use out of a cheap yoga ball! Baby liked bouncing more than rocking!

I have a wooden rocking chair! Its fantastic, I don't need anything else.
That being said, I nursed LO in my bed for the first 4 months, because she was still in our room. So the answer might be different if you're starting your LO in their own room from the start.

I can't speak from experience since LO isn't here quite yet, but we bought a cheap-ish ($250) ikea armchair and added on a glider base ($70). Not sure what your budget is, but the total cost is $100 less than the cheapest glider we could find that we liked (I seem to have expensive taste too :) ) You can really turn any armchair into a glider - there are a lot of tutorials online!

We used an old wooden rocker! I hung a blanket over the back to make it more comfy, only thing i wish I had was a foot stool that glided/rocked with it. Maybe I spent a lot of time in ours, but I found I couldn't get any momentum, pushing us to rock was always on me/my feet on the ground!

We had a similar situation - my parents offered us the rocking chair they had while we were growing up. We took it and it looks sweet in LO's nursery but even if we put cushions on it I don't believe it would be comfortable to nurse DD in. I regret not getting a glider after using one at a friend's house.

@dojo: haha! Too funny! I hated it when I first saw it but after I sat in it I loved it and the price just sealed the deal. Also, for shorties like us it is comfy bc our feet can actually touch the ground :)

I don't think you need a glider, but I think the wooden rocker (especially the arms) will be very uncomfortable. We used an upholstered rocking chair we found on craigslist.

I didn't use either - we had a recliner in our room (which I found uncomfortable for feeding) and an Ikea Poang chair that didn't really rock in my daughters room. I didn't miss the rocking motion and was happy to save a little by repurposing furniture we already had. At night I mostly fed in bed anyway, and was happy to sit on the sofa during the day.

I didn't have a glider and it was fine. I got a cheap ikea chair...it rocks and I was able to put my feet on the floor (I'm super short and my feet usually hang which is uncomfortable for long periods of time). I got the matching ottoman to put my feet up and I loved it. I spent many hours nursing in that chair and now it's our reading chair for bedtime stories

I really didn't want it bc it didn't look nice but it's super comfy and SUPER cheap.

I really wanted a beautiful glider chair for LO's nursery but couldn't stomach the price-tags on the ones I liked. We ended up buying a rocking chair from IKEA and we don't use it a ton so I'm really glad we saved. I would say refinish the rocking chair and use a cushion.

I'm in my second trimester which means it's time to start the nursery!

My question: I have an old wooden rocking chair that belonged to my grandmother. It's sturdy but scratched and chipped. I was thinking that I'd refinish it for the nursery.

But I'm afraid it won't be comfortable because it's wood. I can get a pad for the seat but the back and arms are still just wood. I considered getting a glider but everything in my price range isn't at all my style, and everything I like is crazy-expensive.

So, do I need a glider? Or will a wooden rocking chair be comfortable enough?
