I think it is a parental responsibility to have continuous, age-appropriate discussion about these things as your children grow up.

I will never understand why our culture is so freaked out about giving simple, correct answers to this kind of stuff. During my last pregnancy my daughter had a lot of questions, and I answered them. For the 'how did the baby get there' one, I just explained it in a simple but accurate way. She was like oh, ok. It just wasn't any kind of deal. I refuse to let basic bodily functions be any kind of weird or uncomfortable issue.

Also yes, we will both be involved and in all conversations about sex with our kids, although I'll probably take the lion's share since they're both girls.

I tell my husband it is his responsbility because we are about to have 3 boys because I am terrified to have the talk, however, I know it's important that we both do it. Neither of our parents ever had the talk with us and it's just so out of my comfort zone but really I feel like the talk needs to start happening so much earlier these days! Sigh!

I will definitely have conversations early and often with my kids.

My parents told me nothing. Absolutely nothing. Looking back I find that completely absurd - I didn't go to public school either, so no sex ed. How in the world were they expecting me to have a healthy view of sexuality when it was a topic they flatly refused to discuss?!

@winniebee: We have this talk already but not in tons of detail. He gets that boys have penises and don't have uteruses to hold a baby. We got "It's not the Stork" but it's a little over his head (which makes it easier for me)--I skim over and read the parts I think answer his questions.

@MamaG: yes, we've had (or I've had) several conversations about appropriate touching, calling body parts the right words and not cute nicknames, and telling mom and dad if anyone touches him.

My mom had different conversations with me based on age and we plan to do the same with LO. Right now she asks questions like how DH and I made her, haha. I try to explain as best as I can but it's hard at her age (almost 4).

YES! And I echo much of what has already been said. We've already talked about appropriate touch and what parts of our body we can show at school. It feels so young that we are having the conversations (she's 4!).

Same idea as @mrsrain, it's not really a good idea for it to be a one time talk. It needs to be an ongoing conversation as kids are ready/interested. My mom says I asked what sex was at 5, and she told me. Unfortunately my upbringing got a lot more conservative as I got older, so I never learned anything beyond the basics of how parts fit together (so nothing on consent, orgasms, safety, etc except what little was covered at school). I'll be very clear with my LO from the get go that sex is private, not shameful, fun when you're ready, and something to be careful but not fearful about. And masturbating is normal and healthy dammit. (ETA- All age appropriate of course!)

I wouldn't do "the talk". It will be something that's talked about like normal spanning across the years as they grew up. Answering questions, but also taking initiative to ASK questions to see what they know already.

If anything I think it's more accepted and common now, quite frankly, I think it's irresponsible parenting to not discuss sex with your kids early and often.

"The sex conversation in my house lasted for years and always seemed to come before my morning cup of coffee. My daughter would ask me something and I'd answer her question - and only her exact question - in the most generic way possible. One morning when she was about 10 she came in, sat primly in the kitchen chair, and said, "We've talked around this for quite awhile now. I need you to tell me exactly how this works." So I did. She sat there and listened quietly. When I was done she calmly said, "This has been very informative. Let's never speak of this again.""

The other night at dinner, T asked my husband if he had a baby in his belly (HAHA!) and my husband said no....and when T asked why not...my husband laughed and said "we aren't having this conversation tonight!" I then joked that he has to do all the work in this area since we have both boys. My husband said "no way you have to help me!" and then reflected that his father never had "the talk" with him and that maybe that's sort of an outdated thing to do now.

Do parents still have "the talk" with kids? I say yes! Important to discuss safe sex, etc. What do you think?
