For my nephew's first bday, she made regular cupcakes for everyone else and a naturallyl sweetened banana bread type cake for the bday boy with cream cheese "frosting" (just the cream cheese with apple juice concentrate, no sugar) He liked it plenty but didn't go crazy on it the way birthday kids usually do, but he was happy and he never knew what he was missing. She figured he has loads of time to learn how good cake is, why not let him keep thinking banana bread is the ultimate dessert? </p> <p>A lot of my family thought she was kind of crazy for it, and sure, I would have liked to see him go to town on a chocolate cake, but he's her son and would it have been worth it for a photo op? </p> <p>I say you were in the right. DH and I are dieting and we're trying REALLY hard to keep LO off sugar as long as possible. We were over at MIL's last week and she had pie for dessert, and we all passed. I'm lucky that both my family and in laws are very respectful in terms of what I allow LO to eat. I don't think you are being too strict at all. I don't care what other people say. However, I also try to go with the flow and not make a big deal about most things. In the case of food with your inlaws I probably would have let it slide.
