DD's still bald at the age 1.5, and even with pink/girl clothing people mistake her for a boy, all the time. I don't care anymore. I don't even usually correct people, lol. Usually I'm only talking to these people for a minute or two anyway, and it's not like DD knows that she's a girl, so I figure no harm's done.

my mom says people mistook me for a baby boy all the time because i didn't have hair for the longest time. she said she dressed me in pink and tied ribbons around my head but it didn't help.

I remember when we were little, my mom and her friend would take us out and almost always someone would confuse my brother for a girl and her daughter (same age as brother) for a boy.

Her daughter had no hair until she was much older, whereas my brother had little strawberry blonde ringlets - BUT - he'd be in blue and she'd be in pink. Still people messed it up. I never understood it. Plus, even if their names came up people would still be clueless...and these weren't gender-neutral names. Will and Savannah.

This happens all the time with my friend and her daughter...so now she always puts enormous bows and flowery headbands on her LO. Even with these accessories....she still gets asked if she has a boy. :-(

My mom used to get this all the time with me. I think Mrs. D has it right. If people have a relatively new baby in their life they probably just kind of default to assuming all babies are the same gender as the little one that is special to them. I feel bad even making this comparison but I always just kind of assume all dogs are boys because I've only ever had boy dogs. So it's probably mostly just due to that person's context of babies.

I think sometimes people are trying not to assume what gender the baby is, or when they see your infant they are thinking about the last baby the saw, possibly a loved ones.

I don't know how I'll react if people call our girl a boy, guess we'll see soon!

That happened to my mom with me a lot when I was a baby--even if I was in dresses. She finally pierced my ears and that seemed to help. Don't worry--sometimes it's just hard to tell when babies are young :)

we dress LO in neutral colors often, her carseat and stroller are tan and most of her blankets are brown and tan. (all so that we can use the same stuff for the next baby) most people will ask us..."what's the baby's name?" which also doesn't help them figure it out because her name goes either way as well!

haha yes and don't they always seem to guess the opposite gender? people thought charlie was a girl ALL the time even when he was clearly dressed like a boy. now that he's older it happens less since he has short hair, but up til maybe 1 year of age, people always thought he was a girl if he was in gender neutral colors.

my mom just called me and told me to dress olive in pink so that people know she's a girl because she can't tell in the pictures when olive is wearing gender neutral colors.

@Wondermommy: I dont know why she dressed her baby boy in a yellow dress and headband and I definitely couldnt ask after I had wrongly assumed it was a girl. Maybe she received the clothes as a gift and decided to use it on her baby regardless of gender? lol

@Mrsbells: Lolwut? I'd love to know the back story on THAT!

Our LO is very boy-ish. We'd have him in all blue, with trucks, trains, etc on his clothes, and strangers would still refer to him as "she" or "her". I usually just let it ride, not a big deal. But seriously, people, take notice of the details. I try to suss out what gender a baby is before using the appropriate pronoun. If they're in gender neutral stuff, and it's hard to tell, I use words like "cutie" or "sweetie", etc. Every now and then, I'll come out and ask, "boy or girl?", but always in a nice way.

Yes it happens all the time. She'll be in pink and ruffles and people will say him or boy. I would understand if she wasn't, she looks like a baby right now. But when she's in pink and ruffles I start thinking maybe I shouldn't change the wardrobe that much if the next one is a boy.

Probably every time we go out, somebody asks if my baby is a boy or a girl. Or just says "him." Now, that would be fine if she were in gender neutral clothing, but I don't even think she owns anything gender neutral. It's all pink.

Once I was changing her hot pink diaper while she was wearing a pink frilly dress at temple in the women's room, and a lady asked me if she was a boy or a girl. Really? Even if you're colorblind, she's wearing a frilly dress!

I really just don't understand the issue. She doesn't have much hair, but she's a baby. Does this happen to anybody else?
