I work at home for an east coast company so I don't really have first hand experience with their work ethics. With regards to restaurant service, grocery stores, etc, I do notice that the pace is a lot slower here. I do find myself getting very impatient when I need to get things done. I do think there is a stereotype that Californians aren't as hard of workers as, say, a New Yorker, but I think that's probably like any other stereotype - true for some people, not true for others. When I first got here it was really hard for me to get used to the slower pace of things. It's not that people don't have work ethic here, but there is no focus on efficiency and people aren't nearly as competitive as they are in the northeast. Until I went to law school, I worked very hard in my full-time job and always had a second part-time job. After law-school, I worked about 80 hours a week until I took a job that provided a better work-life balance. </p> <p>Life may be slower-paced in othe geographic areas, but that doesn't mean people don't have a strong work ethic. When I first moved to SF, I was surprised at how hardworking everyone seemed to be (I had heard the rumors). I pointed it out to a friend, and he said that everyone that I thought was hardworking was an East Coast transplant. I was stunned to realize that he was mostly right. One of the secrets of California is that it attracts a lot of people from all over the world and even from within America.</p> <p>After that, I started noticing that was a pretty significant cultural difference between East Coast transplants and those born and raised on the West Coast. It's less about being hardworking and more about an internal tempo/metronome. The pace of life on the East Coast is noticeably faster, as well as being less balanced.</p> <p>One notable caveat here is the tech sector. A lot of my friends live and work in Silicon Valley, and those are some of the most driven and hardest working people you'll ever meet. I don't like the generalization either. I was brought up in Hawaii and fit into East Coast life just fine because I've never been that laid back surfer type. It's like when my dad complains that our generation has no work ethic; it's not that west coasters (or gen x, millennials, etc...) have less of a work ethic, it's that they have a different work ethic. </p> <p>I've noticed that a lot of people on the west coast have a more relaxed lifestyle compared to those on the east coast and that attitude about work/life balance tends to bleed over into the work environment. From my own experience, I think that east coasters and west coasters are equally productive; but west coasters are more flexible in how/when the work gets done. My company has offices in the south, and it isn't that the workers don't work hard (they definitely do work hard!), but there is a difference between the offices.
