@agold: that's true. Many bring their own. But if it's someone who is constantly in and out, I don't ask them to. We are moving this week, and we've already purchased some because we have all new flooring.

I grew up in Russia, where shoes off is the norm and I absolutely keep that norm in my house. I find it gross to walk around in outside shoes at home. I make the assumption at others' houses that I should take them off, unless someone tells me otherwise. Most people when they come to our house will take them off automatically when they see us in socks, but if we're having people over, I don't usually enforce our rule and just make sure to clean the floors afterward.

I grew up wearing my shoes, but my husband is half-Japanese and trained me to stop and now I can't stand when people wear shoes in our house. We ask people to take them off, but not always repair people and it totally stresses me out. My dad used to give me a really hard time about it, but they recently got new carpet and changed the rule at their house. We recently sold our house and even asked people looking to take shoes off (our realtor said it can even be a good thing because people know it's been clean). I probably wouldn't have insisted if we didn't have an about-to-crawl babe. We don't have pets.

I always take shoes off at other peoples' houses. Unless they seem very insistent it isn't necessary.

Here (Ontario, Canada) no one would just walk in with shoes on! Culturally thing I guess to remove shoes.

My grandparents like the support so bring their own slippers.

People usually see a couple of pairs of shoes at the door and then take theirs off, but if they don't notice, then I do have to ask--it's super awkward but I've always given the excuse that rug rats are all over the floor, which is true...

And I always take my shoes off at other people's houses...

Not always but I wish they would! I hate it when people wear shoes in my house. Just seems so dirty and gross to me. We have mostly wood floors so I always wear socks or slippers. My older DS is so trained to take his shoes off right away that he sometimes orders people to do it when they come in.

I take shoes off at my family and close friends house. It's totally a comfort thing. If I'm comfortable and your house is like my house the shoes are coming off and I might even ask for socks if I didn't bring my own. I keep them on when I go to a new friends or family's home or over for a party when lots of people will be in and out. I leave them on at MIL's because there are always pets.

It's 50/50 if people keep their shoes on at my home. We have cold floors- tile and hardwood, so I don't blame them.

What is it with in law's not taking off their shoes in houses?! Mine know I prefer they take their shoes off and do so when I'm there at the door to greet them but if I'm not home when they arrive and my husband lets them in then they don't. It then irks me for their entire visit!

Always take our shoes off and I always ask when people come over. We are asian so that is normal and I'm not shy about it, but I also think it's hugely unsanitary to wear shoes in the house especially when there is animal and human bodily fluids and excrement on the sidewalks in the city we live in.

In our house growing up, no one took shoes off. Since I have lived with DH we always have and have politely asked guests to. Parties are different, and we take rugs up. If I had a carpeted floor I would ask for shoes off at parties though.

It depends, when my son was small and he was always on the floor I was more militant about asking people to take their shoes off. Now, I don't mind as much, especially since I can clean up easily after they leave.

No. I prefer to have my shoes on much of the time, but even if I didn't, we have a dog, so it would feel really obnoxious to ask people to take off their shoes while he tracks whatever he pleases all over the house (we do wipe off his feet, but only when it's wet).

We have friends with a no shoe rule, and I hate it when we go to stay with them, because they have three dogs, so I'm always feeling grit the dogs have dragged in under my bare feet.

@Bao: People that put their handbags up on tables etc, drive me nuts! I only need to think about the places I've had to put my nappy bag (bathroom floors etc) and it gives me the heebies when I see people put their bags on tables or eating surfaces (I also avoid sitting on tables).

we never wear our shoes at home--partly it's a clean thing, but mostly it's just more comfortable to have them off! most people who come in take their shoes off since they see ours off at the door. when they ask, I say they don't have to, but most do take them off.

i've changed my mind on this a bit since now i have a space to take off shoes. i would rather not wear shoes in my house and ask family to take them off, but sometimes you hafta run in and wear them. we have hardwoods though, so not as bad and definitely not muddy shoes! i would say it's probably 50/50 on if people have an expectation of it or not!

I assume all houses are no-shoes-allowed unless I'm told to keep them on. I prefer people to take them off at our house but I don't make a thing about it if they don't. Honestly, we have dogs, so our floors are getting outside dirt tracked onto them regardless. It's good for the gut flora as they say.

I remember a thread on this topic a long time ago, asking what you would do if someone wore their shoes into your home, and @Mrbee said something like he would be horrified and never invite them over again, and steam mop the floors twice. Also recall a friend of mine (who is not Asian) told a story about when she moved in with a new roommate (who is Asian) and hearing from her later about how her new roommate was flabbergasted that she was keeping her shoes on as she moved in. She was like... I was making a million trips back and forth to the car to bring stuff in, I couldn't take them off every time! So interesting to hear about different standards of behavior in different cultures.

I prefer no shoes in the house, and I take mine off when I visit others. I grew up wearing shoes inside the house though, and I don't get upset if guests wear shoes inside my house, especially at birthday parties. I just make sure to clean the floors right away.

I once went to an open house with a no shoe policy. I've also had some workers come inside our house with shoe covers to avoid tracking dirty into the house.

No no no no no no. I think it would be very rude to ask someone to remove their shoes. We do in our home, but not as a steadfast RULE. Shoes provide protection, warmth, orthopedic support that some people may need. (Myself included!) So you don't know the reason someone is wearing their shoes. If you invite someone to your home, you invite their shoes. What about purses? The bottoms of bags are likely just as filthy. Or hands? (I actually did ask people to wash before holding DD when she was newborn at my doctor's suggestion.)

But removing part of someone's outfit, in my obviously passionate opinion, just isn't right.

I have never had someone ask me to, nor have I asked anyone to. Tonight I am actually bringing some slippers (indoor shoes- my Boston Birkenstocks) and will remove my boots and wear those inside just in case that is what the host secretly prefers. I need the orthopedic support. There. That was an obnoxious novel

This reminds me of the Sex in The City episode where Carries shoes are stolen.

We wear shoes in our house or socks or barefoot, when in doubt I take them off in other peoples homes, usually I ask at the door if I do not know their 'policy'
