@winniebee: Yes, except now he gets up to party for two hours in the middle of the night. So he'll sleep 7-7 (or 6:30-7) but be up from 2-4 (or 1:30-4) and still only get 10 hours of sleep total. :( We just started working on transitioning him to putting himself to sleep, instead of being rocked, and I'm hoping that will cure his extended wakeups.

@winniebee: What have you tried to get him to sleep longer? Have you changed bedtime?

My LO is also 5.5 months and sleeps from 8-6:30/7

@winniebee: he slept from 7:30 - 5:30 for a long time. little by little his wakeup time got later. now he wakes up at 7:30, but his bedtime is 8:30. a lot of people i know cried out early morning wake ups and got their kids to wake up at 7 -7:30.

charlie slept 10 hours at night for pretty much a year+, just like olive has always slept a lot at night so i guess their sleep didn't change that much. your lo is still young, and many babies' sleep improves after 6 months. if naps lengthen, night time sleep might lengthen, but many many babies are just fine on 10 hours of sleep at night!

@winniebee: At that age (5-6 months), my son slept from 7:30-6. We're not early birds so the 6am wake up just killed us! So we moved his bedtime a little later, to 8 and he woke up at 7! Awesome! He slept later but ended up sleeping a little longer! We kept him on that schedule for months and months. With my DD, we tried putting her down earlier but she just ended up waking up earlier. So we stuck to her 8:30 bedtime. I would try earlier/later bedtimes and see if that works. I don't think there should be a hard fast rule that babies need to go to sleep between 6:30-7:30. It really really depends on each individual child.

@Mrs. Bee: I remember you saying once that Charlie woke up at 5 for a long time....when he was getting up at 5 was he going to bed at 7? I'm dying from the early wakes these days and was hoping DS would start sleeping more than 10 hours....but I don't think he will!

charlie slept 10 hours at night for the longest time, but he always took monster naps. now he sleeps 10-11 hours at night and naps about 2 hours/day. i would say most of my friends' kids sleep around 11 hours.

olive has always slept more than 12 hours at night. she averages 13, but can sleep 14. but she also takes monster naps

every baby is different!

@pastemoo: Some friends of our put like 15 pacis around their daughter's crib when they got to this point. As she was flailing around she would eventually hit one and manage to get it back in her mouth. It's worth a try!

DS consistently sleeps 10 hours a night; last night he slept 10.5, which is the most overnight sleep he's gotten in weeks! DD also usually only does 11 hours overnight. Both kids do nap a lot during the day, though, so I know they're getting the right amount of sleep overall.

Willa NEVER gets 12 hours....she is pretty much 10.5 like clockwork. If she goes down at 8, she is up at 630. Down at 7, she is up at 530. And she seems perfectly happy and content. I have tried not to mess with it because if I feel like if she is so regular about it than it is what her body needs.

LO also goes from 7-6, with one feeding at night. I think it might be because she naps 3-4 hours during the day? I found that she would do a 12 hour stretch when she woke up twice during night.

My LO sleeps 12 hours or more overnight. But she doesn't take those long 3 hour naps that most kids her age do (or at least I hear they do). I figure as long as she's getting enough sleep total, that's what matters.

@mrstilly: 8-6 is much more preferable to 7-5! I am hoping once DS consolidates his naps (he takes 4 shorter naps a day, unfortunately) he might be able to tolerate a later bedtime.

DS has been an okay sleeper, but has never really gotten more than 10-11 hours overnight. Usually 9.5 to 10 hours is the norm. And he dropped down to one nap at day care ridiculously early because he was the youngest and didn't want to be left out, so he would refuse to nap until the afternoon. DH and I disagreed on how much sleep DS needed until he recently dropped to 1 nap a day on weekends too. He generally been happy and healthy too. His schedule has been 8 pm to 6 am for about the last 9-10 months (he's 18 months old now). An earlier bedtime didn't work out well and at least this way I get to see him after work before he goes to bed.

@winniebee: Oh he knows how to replace it himself during the day... hahah, joke's on me.
Yeah, I have resorted to the swing thing a few times.

Actually come to think of it, the first 3 days in a row when I adjusted bedtime I resorted to the swing. It only gave me 30-45 minutes but that's better than 0! Maybe that will help?

@pastemoo: I do remember that little G didn't sleep much as an infant! I'm glad you are down to a few night feedings but replacing the paci stinks. Maybe you can work on that skill with him (helping him learn to replace it himself!) On the rare occasion, he'll sleep 12 hours - if he wakes at 5 and I put him in the swing he might sleep another 2 hours but I'm tying not to make a habit of that....

You probably don't remember this because it was so awful I'm not sure how much I really talked about it but in the beginning G used to get FIVE to 8 hours of overnight sleep. He was a worse sleeper as a newborn than he is now.
He now gets 10-11 hours overnight and I don't think he has ever gotten 12.
We have gotten down to 2 night feedings but haven't gotten past the 4 month sleep regression (he needs his paci replaced every 1-2 hours).

Luckily for us, we slowly adjusted bedtime (and.... surprisingly wake up time, too!) from 7 30 pm to 6 30 am to 8 30 to 7 30 in preparation for daylight savings time. This morning he woke at 6, not 6 30, but hey... close enough!

I think T may just need 11 hours, too.

PS G is 5 months.

I'm guessing the answer to this is yes.

My son only very rarely sleeps 12 hours overnight. Last night he slept 7-6 (well, really the "new" 5 a.m.) with one wake to eat. Even when he sleeps straight though he only sleeps 10 hours. I try to feed him and get him down again but he doesn't have it, unless I put him in the swing. Oh, and he doesn't make up for it during the day - he's not a good napper. He's 5.5 months. Perfectly happy baby and not fussy.

Anyone else have a baby that doesn't sleep 12 hours overnight? Oh, and if your kid now sleeps 12 hours overnight, have they always done that?
