@ladyfingers: actually I think it's rude for people to talk in another language around others. My sister and BIL do it all the time and I've told her how annoying it can be and she tries to limit it. So it's not your problem, it's a courtesy.

@mrsjazz: that would be mortifying!

@Smurfette: @maybebaby: @REESE: Ha! I'm glad I'm not the only mustachioed lady getting called out in the salon. I always think of Eddie Murphy's Raw where he talks about "hairy goonie goo-goos."

@mrsjazz: that was what i was going to say as well!!! every time i get my brows done, they say "lip too?" i have blonde hair, so i KNOW i have a little fuzz on my lip (and the rest of my face), but if i wanted to get the lip done too, i would ask.

LOL. I've never, but I'm pretty go with the flow anyway. I honestly would LOVE to know what they talk about to each other though, because I don't understand them! I always wonder if they're crackin' on people ;)

Bahahaha. My friend and I went to get pedicures when she visited a while back, and went to an asian salon where the ladies don't speak english very well. Neither of us had had one in a very very long time and the ladies who did our pedicures were talking to eachother (in their language) and laughing, pointing at our feet, and showing eachother our foot skin gratings. I would have been mortified if my friend didnt have the same thing -- we just laughed. I haven't been back there for a pedicure though!!

@mrsjazz: Oh my God! Horrified.

@HLK208: There was a lady there who kept talking about her ingrown toenail, I was so impressed with her openness!

@artbee: Haha aw, I'd love it if somebody told me I had princess nails... I so don't.

@SLR: It bothers me when they talk in another language because I always assume they're talking about me... but that's my problem, not theirs!

@MsLipGloss: Geez!

@Anagram: Yeah it always has been for me. I don't get offended or think they're mean or anything, but it still bothers me! I'm very self-conscious so I always carry every comment around with me forever, well-intentioned or not. It wouldn't keep me from going back somewhere or anything, because I know it's a cultural thing.

@Smurfette: @Pepper: If they ask once I figure it's a wax push... if they ask me 5 times I'm like, geez, I know, I haven't tweezed in a while.

@Thehistoryofus: @leelee: I don't take it personally at all, but it still bothers me, if that makes sense!

@leelee: That's awful! Bad tippers are the worst. I always tip at least 30% at salons, just because it bothers me to give less than $10 (not sure why). She spent an hour at my feet, I feel like she deserves more than a standard tip amount for a $30 pedi!

@rachiecakes: LOL! I was sort of embarrassed too because my feet and ankles are really swollen, but she spent a lot of time massaging to get the edema down and didn't comment so I was really grateful for that!!

@Thehistoryofus: agree!

I definitely wouldn't take it personally. I know alot of people who work in salons and they've had people give them a 2 dollar tip to split up between the person that did their manicure, predicure and waxing.

@MsLipGloss: me too! I danced en pointe for years and have crazy weird bony feet - but they're not that ugly! haha
I also have the kind of skin that turns purple/blue if I'm cold. I remember one time I got a pedicure and she was like "what happen your feet??" oh god, mortified!!
oh well

Haha the pedicure places around here allllways try and push the eyebrow wax! Even if I just got my eyebrows waxed and they look nice, they still ask.

Comments like that never embarass me if I'm with a friend getting something done because we'll both just laugh. It's definitely more awkward when you're by yourself and they're pretty much calling you out in front of strangers!

Are these asian women making the comments?

I'm asking because my asian friends' moms are always much more blunt than is polite in american culture, but it's normal for them and they aren't offended.

One of my best girl friends is Taiwanese, and if she even gains, like, 3 pounds, her mother will tell her she's getting fat (not in a mean way actually, just like...a direct observation). So my salon ladies make comments like that all the time, but I don't really care. just the last time I went, apparently I had a big splinter in my toe (which I didn't even feel--I guess I got it from our hardwood floor), and the lady loudly asked if I wanted her to remove it. I just said--sure! And she went to town with some tweezers.

And then my FAVORITE story is that when one of my husband's south asian friends started dating a chinese woman (I mean, grew up in china---not chinese-american), and when she met one of our other friend's wives, she grabbed the wife's hand and exclaimed, "your arms are so plump and fat! how nice!". I think everyone there was embarassed for the wife, but I felt for both of the women--it was just a difference of cultures! =) =)

@Ladyfingers: YES! I have dancer's feet (even though I don't dance anymore) and am extremely prone to callouses. I have gotten similar comments about *so much skin*. But yanno, I say whatevs, because I tip really well, so that's that! :P

One time, one of the little ladies ran her finger across a very faint scar in the middle of my forehead and said "you very very pretty girl . . . why you not get this fixed?" What do you say to that? So I just said "I'm too sexy for my scar." : /

I haven't had any rude comments (at least to my face), but sometimes hear salon employees talking about clients after they leave. I get soooo annoyed by the holier than thou attitude of some of the salons/stylists around here!

When I got my nails done for my wedding the lady told me that I must not work because my nails looked like princess nails. I kept them long, I'm an artist so I use my hands/nails a lot, but I still manage to keep them nice. I still thought that wasn't nice to say, accusing me of just sitting on my tushy all day long.

Now it's the opposite when (if) I go. But my friend does my eyebrows at least so we can joke about it.....

Oh no! I got a pedicure a few years ago and apparently I had a small plantar wart on my foot after getting back from our honeymoon. A few of the ladies in the salon told me to wrap it in duck tape. They said it really loud and everyone else looked really grossed out. I wouldn't have gotten a pedicure if I knew I had a wart on my foot!! Ick.

I got a pedicure today to pamper myself here at the end of the pregnancy, and I could seriously count on one hand the number of times I've had one in my life. I'm liking them more as I get older, but I always find them so awkward. At any rate, I clearly don't get them frequently or practice great foot-care at home -- especially with a huge belly in the way. The lady used one of those cheese-grater things to slough off the dead skin, and when was done, she was like, "You want to see all the skin?" and flashed me the grater FULL of dead skin. I was so mortified!

Last time I got one done, I had a similar experience! The lady was like, "SO MUCH SKIN."

DUDE. I KNOW. THAT'S WHY I'M HERE.

Are you ever embarrassed by comments salon workers make about your upkeep? I also had one lady one time ask me -- about 5 times -- if I was SUUUUURE I didn't want to get my eyebrows waxed after my manicure. Um, are you trying to tell me something?
