The stoplight style clock works for DS but he is 3.5 and has a strong grasp on expectations and that red means stay in bed and green means it's ok to get out. I'm not sure that it would have worked for him prior to turning 3.

He totally understands how it works but it doesn't stop him from getting up before it is time. If he wakes up before the sun he usually just crawls into bed with us.

The one good thing was he stopped crying every morning once he had the click

We've had great luck with this one for the past two years (https://www.amazon.com/Stoplight-Sleep-Enhancing-Alarm-Sports/dp/B002TKLN46/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469027619&sr=8-1&keywords=stoplight+clock). One tip I read that we used is to set the clock to an attainable time and then slowly move it after they get used to the concept. When our guy turned two, he was suddenly waking at 4:30 or 5 a.m. I think we set it for 5, kept it there for a week, and then moved to 5:15, 5:30 and eventually 6 a.m. He knows he has to be quiet in his bed until the light turns green.

For us, it did not.

But, at age 4, my son now wakes up and plays in his room or goes downstairs and plays until his brother and I wake up. Which is fine by me.

My 3yo wakes at 5am too and it's been brutal, especially after a night of feeding the baby every 3 hours. We already have a door handle cover but he's figured out that if he is loud enough we will come in to give him time out, plus he wakes the baby so we can't ignore him. I bought the okay to wake clock and it hasn't worked yet but it's only been 3 days. He gets it but I need to come up with a bad enough punishment for being loud before green because he's just been banging loudly every morning so I will come in and wait with him until the okay to wake time. Positive reinforcement has never worked for us because he is happier when we are mad so it's almost like he is discouraged by it. Good luck.. Hope you have a child who gets it!

It didn't work at first for our two year old until we put a child lock on the inside of the door so that when he tried to go out of the room he couldn't and had to think about his light. He was waking up around 5 but we slowly we were able to move his wakeup back and now he knows he has to stay in his room until 6:45. Since he has a 3 month old brother it's been a lifesaver on rough nights.

We tried it at 3.5 years old. He totally understands and the first week when it was still a novelty it worked great. Now it's hit or miss depending on his mood. Sometimes he wants us to stay in his room with him until it's wake up time lol.

Nope, he didn't really get it. We ended up putting a doorknob cover on and he would just go back to bed if he got up. I'm pregnant and sleep is precious enough without a 2 year old thinking 5am is an ok time to start the day. Now he's back to waking after 7 and we're much happier.

Sorry, it's a big fat nope for us. She has had it for 7 months. She gets it but totally ignores it. She does love having it. It hasn't given us any extra sleep/quiet time though, unfortunately.

@Orchid: my kid had started coming out of his room before the new baby, but the new baby made it 100x's worse. Before that we had 5 blissful months of him waiting in his room for us to get him up!

The first few times we had to sit in his room with him and wait for the light turn green so he would get the point but now he obeys it pretty well.

Yes and yes. I actually put the clock a few minutes past when DS was waking up and after a few weeks he started sleeping almost an hour later.

@brownepiano: we've had these sleep problems about 2 weeks now. I'm hoping it ends soon! It didn't start until the newborn was about 4 weeks though, so it's hard to say if it's the regression or the adjustments to our family circle.

When we brought home the new baby, my two year old started waking up at 5 am and started having really short naps. The clock has really helped although we still have to send him back to bed some mornings. His sleep got a lot better after about a week and a half.

@Orchid: I had read it here that late naps and early bedtimes could lead to early wake ups. I figured I had nothing to lose so I tried and it helped some. https://childsleepscience.wordpress.com/2014/02/12/common-age-by-stage-sleep-schedules/

Yea it worked great for a while. And yes they come out of the two year regression! We have the ok to wake clock and it's been good. She mostly waits for it except when she is sick and just cries. But the 2 year regression is no joke. Have you tried adjusting nap time? Moving nap time earlier so she had a longer wake time between nap and bed helped with the early morning wake ups too.

Do the toddler clocks keep your little ones in bed till the appointed time?

We are dealing with 5am wakeups (2 year sleep regression and new sibling home) and we are desperate.

Also, do kids come out of the sleep regression eventually??? Please say yes!
