The close-up looks semi-professional (really good!), but the action shots look like a normal P&S... by no means are they "bad," but I wouldn't say semi-pro!

Yes - especially the close up! The only suggestion I would know to make (off the top of my head) is to try to observe the Rule of Thirds in your shots . . .

The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts.

The theory is that if you place points of interest in the intersections or along the lines that your photo becomes more balanced and will enable a viewer of the image to interact with it more naturally. Studies have shown that when viewing images that people’s eyes usually go to one of the intersection points most naturally rather than the center of the shot – using the rule of thirds works with this natural way of viewing an image rather than working against it.

From: http://digital-photography-school.com/rule-of-thirds#ixzz2Qef5Hkdv

ETA: Fancy way of saying not to center every shot!

I tested a pattern for a designer yesterday and I am supposed to take semi professional pictures of DS in the shorts to send to the pattern designer. Do these look semi professional? I have no clue what I'm doing and DS won't sit still to pose.

ETA: The quality of the pictures are much better on my computer. Not sure why they downloaded to the post with such a lower quality?
