@daniellemybelle: Don't get me wrong, I eat healthy (organic and free range stuff) and avoid canned foods and plastics (if i can) too. I just don't worry too much about BPA and chemicals and etc. :D

@chopsuey119: I try to take this tactic, but its hard to deny that stuff in our environment & food has affected people... that's why more people are getting cancer and are infertile than ever before! But I sound crazy saying that, haha, even if it is true. I'm gonna try to back off canned food and plastics but it's really impossible to avoid...

I read that plastic that DOESN'T have 3, 6, 7 on it are ok. Is that not true? I'm going to start to try to avoid all of them but I want to know in the meantime (as I'm stockpiling more glass containers) what is absolutely NOT safe!

I got horribly ill (chronically, life-threateningly ill) a few years ago from one of those things the majority of reasonable adults assume are harmless. Since then, I've been more aware - even got my nutrition certification to aid in my healthy living quest. Canned goods are also less healthy than fresh/frozen/jarred foods due to the preservatives used. I try to use fresh/frozen more than canned, but I still use canned diced tomatoes, tuna, and a few other things. 'Course, my system is now sensitive enough that I have to use mostly organic/non-canned/fresh foods, or I start having spasms and memory issues again (and fatty foods throw my digestive system WAY off), so healthy eating is 100% necessary for me.

We actively avoid BPA and have been since before pregnancy.

During pregnancy, I switched to 60% all natural cleaners. I use Mrs. Meyers. It's great stuff, I like the smell! The other 40%: Dawn (nothing cuts grease like Dawn, nothing natural at least), Cascade (I tried all natural dishwasher detergent, it left food on the dishes!), and a little bleach cleaner for bathrooms.

Really the change isn't that hard. Actually, it saved me money because I bought the Mrs. Meyers that you dilute to make different cleaners and I go through way less of that than bottles of Windex/Fantastik/whatever, and we bought long lasting Pyrex reheatable dishes. I was concerned for her sake and I'm glad we changed!

I've kind of given up on worrying about all that. It's impossible to avoid everything. I don't heat up plastics and such, but I don't freak out. I use plastic water bottles and such- since it doesn't leach much with cold items.

The news is acting like BPA is something new, but I did a presentation on that class of chemicals when I was in high school (in 1997!). It is in most everything- you got PVC pipes in your house- guess what's leaching into your hot water? Saran wrap? Canned foods? None of that is new.

I'm a molecular biologist who studies cancer, and knowing what I know, I take reasonable steps to avoid unnecessary exposure, but by and large, I don't lose sleep over it.

I'm totally freaked out by BPA and I'm not usually that kind of person. It just seems to be in everything I use! The list includes soup cans, toilet paper, pizza boxes, plastic bottles and a lot more.

I switched to BPA free water bottles and try not to use disposable water bottles. I quit microwaving plastic and I've cut down on canned soup. Still using toilet paper though! : )

I am concerned about BPA and try to avoid it, but I’m sure I don’t avoid everything that has BPA. Honestly, it’s too difficult to know what does/does not/might/might not contain plastic bits or coating. The only thing we eat out of a can is refried beans, and I made sure the reusable water bottle I have at work is BPA-free. The hardest for me is that I used to eat deli meat sandwiches for lunch every day. Now that deli meat is nixed from my diet (and because I take a nap at lunch so need something quick to prepare), I end up eating a lot more frozen meals for lunch. I remove the plastic top/sleeve completely when I heat, but I have no idea if there is a plastic coating inside the meal tray (most of the ones I buy are Ethnic Gourmet or Amy’s, and come in a tray that looks/feels like paper, not plastic). Bah.

I will definitely make sure the bottles we use and any item that would go into babies’ mouth for extended periods of time are BPA-free.

Yes, definitely. I have tried to stay away from canned goods and any cups that don't say BPA free (I carry a Starbucks cold cup around and drink water out of that). At home, I drink out of the tap instead of the fridge water ... but I do use freezer-made ice. I guess some things are unaviodable, but I try my best to avoid BPA especially while pregnant.

There's just so much to consider, sometimes I get analysis paralysis. We don't use a lot of plastic and we don't have a microwave, but sometimes, I have to carry food to locations outside of the house and I don't want to be carrying glass because it is heavy! I try to avoid the obvious stuff, but sometimes convenience wins out, and that's where I get worried.

DH and I use lock & lock's and MIL called me a few weeks ago telling me to dbl check if there is BPA in those products. I checked, they're BPA-free.

i started becoming a lot more conscious once my cat got cancer, and because i'd read so many things about girls getting their periods at a younger age these days due to environmental toxin exposure. i try to use all green cleaning products as possible, don't eat canned foods almost at all, and have eliminated as much plastic as possible (though that one is the toughest!).

We're careful about microwaving plastics and try to put things on a plate or in a bowl first. instead of the tupperware we were storing it in. A lot of things say well chemicals are in such low levels it's not a big deal. But constant exposure to low levels of chemicals is a big deal. We didn't evolve with that kind of exposure to chemicals and so our bodies aren't always adapted to repairing itself against that kind of damage. It's not like with bacteria where we have a whole immune system to defend against them,

I'm worried enough that we've totally switched to water bottles that are bpa-free, try not to buy anything unless it states that it's bpa-free, and since we take left-overs for lunch-we've switched to glass containers. I finally got rid of the last of my plastic containers. We're ttc and it's something easy we can do. Once I'm pregnant and have a baby, I'll probably be even more crazy!

We don't use a lot of can goods (try to do fresh or frozen) but I worry when I do use them because a lot of cans are lined which contains bpa.

I didn't know the part about the canned goods. Thanks for the info!

I have become a lot more conscious of it since becoming a mom and I make sure anything she uses is BPA free ... although she probably has some plastic toys that are not, but they aren't things that she puts in her mouth.

However, I still eat frozen meals that come in plastic packaging and drink bottled water so those are two things I haven't managed to cut out. Heck, I probably will never fully cut those things out, though.

I've been reading some articles about BPA lately. The FDA even admits it is harmful, and it has been shown in studies on rats to affect both male and female fertility. I found this article on how to avoid it:

http://www.ewg.org/bisphenol-a-info

But it seems like it's in everything! We're not TTC so I am thinking about my fertility, but it applies to pregnancy and baby-dom too... it's so hard to avoid harmful chemicals! Are you particularly concerned about stuff like this?
