It doesn't bother me. Everyone makes mistakes and it can be very expensive to re-print things if one typo gets missed. It doesn't add charm, but I don't make fun of it.

It doesn't bother me or make me think it's more authentic. It is frustrating when traveling to other countries to automatically be given the English menu with so many crazy misleading translations - I always ask for the local language menu even if it's not a language I'm fluent in.

I find them endearing if they are funny (like "Happy family dish with sauce" or something). If they are just typos though, they kind of bug me.

@petitenoisette: Haha that reminds me, there's a place in our city called "Jugo Juice" and DH always makes fun of it because Jugo is spanish for juice. So he always calls it Juice Juice.

I've noticed this in some places before and it doesn't bother me. In the places I've noticed it, they're usually small, family owned restaurants run by people where English is not their first language. How could you blame them? Starting a business is expensive and I can't imagine hiring a professional translator/editor for the menus was a top priority.

However, if I see a typo on a menu or flyer for a big chain restaurant, I think that's unacceptable. For instance, I remember seeing a typo on a flyer for a popular chain pizza place, in great big letters, they got "Dessert" and "Desert" mixed up. That made me laugh in a "making fun" kind of way. I thought that was a mistake they should have caught considering the word took up half the page.

I think it's a little silly, sometimes it seems like it wouldn't be hard to find someone to proofread for them! So I don't really find it negative or positive.

What annoys me is restaurants trying to use another language to make themselves seem fancy and then spelling words wrong. Specifically I see this in the US with French (and I'm a French teacher so of course this would annoy me!). Like calling your restaurant Cafè francais or something like that :silly:

It doesn't bother me. I might chuckle at it but think nothing negative about it. The English language is hard. It doesn't matter if I see it here in the US or when traveling internationally.

Come on! We probably say and do some dumb stuff when we are traveling as an American in a foreign country. Ehh, learning and writing English for someone whose primary language isn't English isn't such a big deal. They tried. I can usually understand what they mean. Plus, is there some rule that requires you to be an expert in the home country's language when you move/live there? I think not!

Hehe. I think it's cute. When I lived in Korea, I used to take pictures of all the weird translations/grammatical mistakes and send them to a friend (he would get a kick out of it), but it was so common there, I had to stop - it was everywhere! I still find endearing and so cute, especially when it comes with drawings of crying baby animals!

Typically I find grammatical mistakes on permanent documents like a menu or brochure to be kind of half assed. I don't know that I find it charming in ethnic restaurants, but have to give props when I know it's likely English language learners since their English is probably better than my Japanese.

it's funny to me when abroad, but i think of the horrible translations we have of certain languages and it must read the same way for native speakers of other languages. i do think it's more strange when it's incorrect in a city in the US where help is easily available!

It doesn't bother me in an ethnic restaurant. Sometimes it's amusing (not in a making fun way). In a "regular" restaurant I might think they couldn't be bothered to proofread but it wouldn't stop me from eating there if the food was good.

Since I'm a writer, I always like to correct menus--but this is for all menus.

There was just something controversial in the literary world about this. A well-known white poet posted some typos from a Chinese restaurant in his neighborhood making fun of it, which started a bunch of people chiming in to make fun. Then quite a few Asian writers spoke up about how many of these restaurants are run by people whose first language isn't English. They talked about people making fun of Asian immigrants, for many of whom English is a third language and growing up in this country being made fun of for their accents. It was interesting and eye opening.

If I see a typo, then I usually figure that the ethnic restaurant is more authentic!

I'm not so sure when it's not an ethnic restaurant though. I have a specific situation in mind here: I started helping my (Japanese) mom with her business after I moved here, and she has a restaurant that offers a "Tuna Delax Salad". Typos really bother me, but I feel bad correcting my mom's English - especially as she'd have to reprint all the menus. Plus I feel like (hope?) that my mom kind of gets a pass since she's not a native English speaker. But I'm not 100% sure...

Do typos and grammatical mistakes in menus add charm to ethnic restaurants? What about other types of restaurants?
