It's an interesting line to walk as white people, listening when Black people reach out, speak at protests, post online, etc., without asking them directly to do so. We need to take on that emotional and mental labor to seek out what is already available and listen when people are ready to talk. A lot of white people are uncomfortable when they hear this because they feel like they are trying to do the right thing. We need to sit with that discomfort, question it, and look for alternatives. But what happens with requests like that is you are unintentionally asking Black people to do processing and emotional labor for you. It's great to acknowledge that you and your friends don't have a lot of information and that you want to get more. But we have Google, and lots of places in the media are putting out lists of anti-racist books and things for white people to read and educate themselves. It's your job, not the job of Black bloggers on this or any platform, to educate yourself. Our (white) preschool principal recently tried to host a town hall on being anti racist and it was suggested to him that he listen and not talk. So that’s where I was coming from.
