I do it whenever we're near a bathroom. I didn't do it with bf'ing poops (unless using cloth), but since she started solid food, I nearly always do it. For 3 reasons: 1) so the pail stinks less, 2) I am trying to lay a foundation right now for potty training, so now whenever there is poop I show LO and she immediately runs to the toilet, watches me dump it, and flushes the toilet. I'm trying to teach her that's where poop belongs. 3) maybe some environmental benefit to not having it in a landfill?

@Alivoo01: Fair enough. I have a girl, so she's actually not that interested in sticking her hands anywhere near the diaper most times, so besides her trying to roll over and get away there's not much risk of having the wipes somewhere easy to grab. But I've heard of this fascination boys have.... haha.

@Sapphiresun: Ah. I see. DS is eating a ton of solids, but his poop is still super mushy. It comes out explosive and peanut butter consistency so when I go to change him, I take a wipe and wipe downwards from his pee pee into the poopy diaper immediately because he's taken to grabbing his pee pee when I take the diaper off. Then it's a mad dash to get him all cleaned up before he reaches for other poopy body parts, rolls over and sits up. Eww. lol

@Cherrybee: I agree with the recycling but I have been to recycling plants with children on school trips and all the rubbish has to be sorted by hand anyway so I don't see why we can't just have recycling and non recycling bins...?

This is a hot topic!

I admittedly didn't even think about the environmental factors for doing this. For me, it's cutting down on the stink. And the thought of a bunch of poop-filled diapers hanging out in my house grosses me out.

@Snowdrop: We have three full sized wheelies.... and we don't live in the countryside!! I live in a tiny terraced house. I totally, totally agree with it but they are an eyesore! They're lined up in front of my house (yuk) and every other house in the street. Fortunately, it's still weekly collection - if they smelled as well I don't know what I'd do!!

@Snowdrop: Ooh, once a fortnight? Eek! Ours is a weekly collection and we pay wheelie bin cleaners who come every 4 weeks. Yeah, if it started to get stinky we would have to rethink because the bin is by our front door (I HATE it but we have no rear access).

@Cherrybee: my LO is a long way from being here yet and I do 'plan' on using cloth nappies but either way I will be using flushable inserts for poo because we only get our main bin taken away once a fortnight. I think it would get very full and stinky.
We also have a dog and her poo goes down the toilet too, mainly for the stink aspect again, if we are out abd about I just put it in a council bin.

I never have and I have only ever heard of this on HB. I have just looked on our local council's website and specifically states which bin (we have three different types of bin for recyclables, compostables and general rubbish) you should put your pet waste in - and asks you to double bag it. It also mentions the need to double bag nappies (diapers) but doesn't say if you should remove the waste or not.....

The UK government website states:

"If the waste is non-hazardous, and as long as it is appropriately bagged and sealed, it is acceptable for the waste to be disposed of with household waste. This is usually the case with sanitary towels, nappies and incontinence pads (known collectively as sanpro waste) which are not considered to be hazardous when they originate from a healthy population."

So then I looked at the nappy packet (Pampers). It says nothing about emptying the contents down the toilet. The only info it has about disposal is in picture form - a person putting rubbish into the bin, and a picture of a toilet crossed out (of course this means don't flush the nappy).

So.... I don't know if the rubbish disposal system here is different......? But I don't think we need to do it here?

I never have, anyway!

90% of the time, yes, we flush poop down the toilet. Putting poop in the garbage contaminates the water supply. It is why we don't all shit in the garbage. It is so easy, it doesn't smell up your house and I don't see the big deal about bringing a diaper to the bathroom and turning it over. I think people are making it out to be a bigger deal than it is. You just get into the habit and it becomes part of the routine.

Yep we do it to cut down on the smell. Our change pad is in the bathroom along with the diaper genie.

We try to get as much off of the diaper with the wipe but I won't scrape it off if its really stuck on there.

Only for solid poops (to reduce the stink factor). DD, at 24 months still has peanut butter consistency diapers and those are difficult to get into the toilet so I don't even try anymore.

In my state, a diaper with solid waste must be wrapped/sealed in plastic to be able to dispose of it - which is no problem for us since we use the diaper genie and have plastic bags in the diaper bag.

No one I know flushes the contents of the diaper though unless they CD.

Yes, we didn't cloth diaper, used disposables only, but once she was on solids we've dumped into the toilet. We've never had a changing table in the bathroom, so like others have said, we just set the diaper aside and then carried it to the bathroom and dumped and flushed. It's really not a big deal and we do it for smell and environmental reasons.
