I EP'ed, and I would generally let freshly pumped milk cool in the fridge before combining. If I was going to use the milk the same day, I might not worry about mixing warm/cold as much, but definitely wouldn't combine if I planned on freezing or storing in the fridge for a few days.

Agree with the raising the temp of the milk encouraging bacteria growth.

All of my pumped milk goes straight in the fridge anyway and it all gets used the next day, so I've never been really worried. I figure if it's going to go in the fridge anyway, why not have it go in the fridge in an almost full bottle of cold milk, vs a 1 or 2 oz bottle only to mix in a couple hours? I hate leaving behind that ring of fat in the bottle when mixing.

Lactation consultant said there was no actual research to back up the rule, so I've never followed it. Not sure how true that is as I've never looked for the research, but I've never had a problem combining.

I pretty much always followed it. I think you don't want to warm the cooled milk for it to grow bacteria. If I was just adding 1oz to a pre bottle of like 8oz I figured it would be fine.

I didn't worry about it. I would often pump directly into bottles already containing refrigerated milk from previous sessions that day. I would put them right back into the fridge afterwards though. I wouldn't have left them out and then re-mixed. As it is, I had to scald the milk once I got home anyway, so I figured bacteria would be killed at that point if there was any.

I never follow it, but I think the reason they say it is because of bacteria growth. The warm milk raises the temperature of all the milk and encourages bacteria growth. Same reason you shouldn't leave a juice bottle out after you've drunk out of it.

Never followed it. I would sometimes pump directly into the same bottles with milk from earlier in the day at work.

I always followed it. I refrigerated my milk at work and mixed them to make full bottles at the end of the day when it was all cold.

I wasn't anal about it, it just worked out that way. Haha

Almost always totally ignore. I think the point of the rule is to make sure that the oldest milk doesn't end up being at too warm a storage temp for too long. I pump pretty small amounts, and I store in a very cold cooler bag. I combine until I have enough for a a bottle. It cools quickly enough that I've never been concerned.

I kinda did? But I often would cool fresh milk and mix it with defrosted or heat defrosted and mix with fresh.

How often do you follow the mixing "like with like" rule for pumped milk, as in, you can mix two bottles of warm/freshly-pumped milk, or two bottles of cold milk, but you can't mix warm and cold?

I think this is a bit of a silly rule and can't find a good explanation for it. I follow it about 80% of the time but sometimes it's just more convenient to mix, rather than wait, especially if it's just an oz or so. I hate storing bottles with just 1oz to chill before mixing!

I'm probably not going to change my ways, but just curious!
