My parent's definitely used the names "of the times". We are specifically looking for names outside of the top 50 so a little different.

@Mrs. Champagne: Probably not. We'll use DH's name as a Jr. if it's a boy but our possible girl name is totally different.

In theory we have similar tastes (liking classic but not TOO popular names) but our favorites are always different.

My parents chose royal names for all of us. We didn't do that but we chose classic, but less used names.

My mom picked pretty classic names for my sister and I. We also went with a traditional name for DS so I guess our styles are similar.

both my brother and I have very classic and common names, though some of the names my mom liked that my dad vetoed are a bit wacky (like, my mom wanted to name my brother Robin...not my taste). I like names that are still classic but a little more unusual, like in the top 200-500 rather than top 50.

my mom likes our name choices though! she has already approved, haha

DH's parents named all the kids J names - DH and his brother have "normal"/more traditional names, sister has a unique one. DH's middle name is also a nickname for his first name. Picture: Jonathan John or Michael Mike. Like that.

My parents named us L names.

I tend to go for very long flourished names (Evangeline, Sabrina, Emelia, Josephine, etc) often with fun nicknames. for my mom its hard to say what she likes she definitely prefers strong classic boys names (Thomas, Christian, Michael, etc) My dad likes names that would be considered popular for his generation but are pretty dated for today (Donna, Lisa, Denise, Susan)

We had a hell of a time discussing different names with them when we were picking our daughters name.

My mom named my sister and I very unique names...and then my little sisters is super common.
I want to give my children unique names too. I've always loved having one.

She doesn't like my name I've picked out for my son though!

We are very similar. For all the girls in the family she choose uncommon but beautiful names. For the boys she chose very sophisticated and classic names (think regal almost). She loved all my baby name choices.

I think we're about the same. My parents liked trendy names, but not crazy names. Also, they like the idea of naming after someone, in some cases. But, me and my siblings all have timeless names, too, if that makes any sense.

DS's name is pretty timeless, too, so I guess we do have that in common.

To some degree. My parents and I both prefer names that are not ethnic. My parents picked contemporary, trendy names, where as my favorites are either unique or old -fashioned.

My mom's name is quite unusual and she has hated it all her life, so her philosophy on naming kids is "the more normal and popular, the better." My name was very high on the popularity list for my birth year, and my brother's name is one of the classics that never goes out of style. I'm not sure my dad had such strong feelings about it, but I know he really likes both names.

DH likes unique names, but not in the spelling way -- more in the "I'm not sure I've ever heard of anyone else with that name" way. Add in that these names are all in his first language, and they become VERY unusual around here, indeed. I'm in the middle, as I like names that are a little uncommon but not so much so that the kids will get teased or have a hard time later in life because of it. My mom will probably be horrified by our name choices, but they're really not that out there...she'll just be afraid of the fact that they're nowhere near the Top 100.

The only thing my dad ever said when we were naming our first was "make sure it isn't too weird in case he becomes the president".

We both like classic, "normal" names.

My mom likes names that she thinks are unique. Most of them are yooooneek though. She said she heard someone named Mike but it was spelled Myk and she thought it was so great. She also just had a friend with a new grandson named Jackson, but also spelled very odd. She thought it was so "clever!"

Ah! Then she says she doesn't like names like Everett. She has very different taste then me! (also please note my name was #3 the year I was born, so I don't know where her sudden craving for yoooneekness is coming from!) I don't even know my dads opinions, but I have a feeling he would choose some odd options too.

My choices are all real names, out of the top 500 or so. Hers are all whacky spellings or in the top 50.

How do your name choices stack against your parents?
