@Mamaof2: my old school would usually have the student present, my current school doesn't allow it. I guess I see pros and cons for each. Again, I'm in middle school and the parent conferences tend to focus on kids who haven't turned in a bunch of homework, or who are failing every test.... so it's different.

Pros are that you can get the student and parent together so there's no "telephone", because kiddos have a tendency of lying to their parents (like, "my teacher never gave me the homework!") and the teacher can show the parents with the student present where they write the homework each day, and you can make a plan of action all together and get everyone on board. Cons to having the student there are that I guess some conferences could devolve to a "he said-she said" argument of student vs. teacher (I've never had a conference like that, but I hear stories). And it's a con that sometimes it might be a psychological blow for a child to hear say, 5 teachers all at once talk about all the work they are missing, how behind they are, etc. Kids being kids, they tend to come away from those meetings just feelings like teachers hate them--which isn't the case.

The school offers childcare during the conference hours so we could both go. But I set up the times too close to each other so we ended up having to divide and conquer. Will know for next year.

@Anagram: as a teacher do you think the child should be present? Its not an option for DS since he is in K this year but for grades 1-6 it is - thoughts?

@BadgerMom: There's no place for him to wait, but I mentioned your idea to bring him to Bee and she mentioned we could bring headphones and a video for him! So now we can both go - thanks!!

I always went to my conference with both of my parents. If they didn't want me present for all or part of it, there was usually someplace for me to sit and wait for them to finish.

So, I'm on the other side--as the teacher. We have some parents that come together and some that come solo. We're used to either/or. We also have 3 days of parent conferences coming up next week and early dismissals for the students on all three days.

I think elementary school/pre-k conferences are probably totally different than middle school. Personally (as both a teacher AND a parent), I think every single child/their parents in the school should get a conference at least once a year--even if it's all positive and the kids are doing fine, etc. I find that in middle school, conferences are only scheduled for "problem students", so they tend to be more negative--meanwhile, the kids who are on track and doing well don't get conferences at all. I hate it.

The parent side of me feels like even if my child is doing well in all subjects, I want to know about her development overall--what is she strong in? What is she weak in? Is there anything we can do at home to support what's being done in the classroom? That kind of thing.

School gets out early today so that there's time for parent/teacher conferences, so I'll be picking up my son early - at 11:50 am!

Didn't realize this until yesterday, but that means that one of us parents has to stay home and watch our son while the other goes to the parent/teacher conference. I guess whoever goes will just report back to the other parent (or maybe record it, if the teacher is ok with that?). Wish we could both be there, but didn't have time to arrange for babysitting!
