I have one through work and through Modern Woodmen, which my parents set up when I was a baby.

DH has had a hard time getting an affordable policy because of his health (he's type 1.5 diabetic and has had kidney cancer).

I've started to consider adoption, and this has me a little worried because the agency we'd most likely use requires both parents to have life insurance.

We are in the process of applying (getting labs/exam done this week actually!) now that we have a kiddo. I'm getting us a 10 yr term policy through my professional organization that goes through NY Life. Should cover mortgage (which we don't have yet but hopefully will within 10 years) and paying off student loans and baby raising expenses. The other option I looked into was AAA's plan. After 10 years we'll reevaluate what we need based on what we have through work, how many kids we have, what that future mortgage is, etc.

I think it's Minnesota Life. Our financial planner did a bid shop around and chose the best deal. We made sure our mortgage would be covered with both, but mine is cheaper and for less money.

We both do through Ohio National.

As an FYI to those who only have work plans - while you can convert them after you leave the company, what you have through your companies is considered term life, rather than whole life. Once you convert it, it will be far more expensive than what you pay for through work.

@regberadaisy: We both have life policies through our employers and my husband has a separate individual policy not thought his employer, which I believe is through Prudential.

Just an FYI, you can take work/employer-sponsored group life insurance policies with you when you leave your employer – you have the option to convert group life insurance to an individual policy when you leave your employer. You’ll pay a higher rate for an individual policy vs. the group (i.e., employer sponsored plan); but you can take life insurance coverages with you when you leave your employer. This is mandated by the state, not by specific employers, and different states have different timelines where you're eligible to convert your coverage, etc..

The New York Department of Insurance has mandated that individual whole and universal life policies are offered to employees converting from a group life to an individual life policy. Your employer should have given you notice of this when you left employment.
