I kind of feel like if you give something to someone, you don't really get a say in what they do with it... Loaning and giving are not the same thing, and I would expect it to be clear when a person handed something over one way or the other. I think it is interesting that people would assume things were a loan. (I never asked for them but took them to be polite). I'm going to say about a big portion of the clothes I own are gifts, purchased new or I bought from consignment sale. The hand me downs I got was a small portion. Honestly, I have no idea which ones were given to me and which ones weren't. With twins, I don't have time for that. I hardly remember which outfits were given to me by the gifter. DH has been bugging me to get rid of the clothes and so I decided to consign. </p> <p>Anyway, my sister said she had no attachment to the clothes she gave me. As far as I know, she still might be one and done or she might be on the fence about another. I'm not going to ask her because I'm sure others are bugging her about having another. She just didn't realize her attachment to the particular outfit in question until she saw it on my son and so she simply asked if I still had it when I told her I was consigning. All seems to be well here. But yeah, definitely need to ask if there are any strings attached to hand me downs in the future. Definitely should tell people to label them if they want it back. Also, I certainly don't look at hand me downs as money makers. I just had a bunch of unused new baby items to sell and wanted to sell some of the items I've received as gifts or purchased myself. I guess the items that were hand me downs were missed. I got a few things from friends and as my lo outgrew them I put them into a bag to return them- but in sure a few items got mixed up. When I lent a friend clothes I expected the same- she would return most but some things would get lost or too dirty to save or whatever. At the time, she was one and done. Now, I'm not sure. I didn't even think to ask her. Uh oh. I honestly didn't think it was hers. I thought I bought it from another consignment sale. Oops. I did talk to the DH and he think we still have it because he saved it. I hope we still have it. </p>
