@mrsmate: I don't know any local artisans geared toward children, though now you have me thinking I should look into some! I had planned on trying to get some toys that encouraged more open-ended play.

I rarely ask. I enjoy coming up with gift ideas (for kids).

I don't ask...I just go online and look at guides and reviews. If I really can't decide then my fall back is clothes and books. I just figure if friends ask me what DD needs I would always just say she doesn't NEED anything so I figure that's what they will say to me too.

I ended up asking and it looks like I'll need to browse some guides!

I always ask, because different LOs have different tastes, and you never know what they already have! When people have asked what DS and DD want I just say "DS is really into anything with wheels and balls and DD loves princesses" so they can still pick something cool out if they want.

I usually just ask what they like or their size when I RSVP for the event.

No, I just give a gift receipt with whatever I come up with on my own.

I actually really HATE when people ask what I want. I'm always worried I'm going to say something too expensive and they'll think I'm greedy.

If I'm close enough to them, I ask. Otherwise, I just browse online at guides and go from there.

I only ask family and close friends if they need anything specific. Everyone else, I've been giving books by my friend, a local children's book author/illustrator. Is there a local artisan that you could support this way?

If the books weren't appropriate, I give a product I really liked when my LO was their kid's age, w/a gift receipt. If it's an older kid, I usually do art supplies.

I always ask if I know the person.
If I don't know them I usually just pick something I think they will like.

We haven't had to buy very many gifts for children of friends/family, especially past their birth, and it finally occurred to me that I've never asked what they wanted or needed.

If you don't know someone very well or know what they own would you guess at a gift or ask what they need? I just don't feel comfortable asking this person in particular because she seems to feel entitled about receiving gifts and I want to reinforce that as little as possible.
