It seems like a total luxury to have time to heat up all your food on the stove. By the time I get my LO home from day care she wants to EAT and so 30 seconds in the microwave it is!

Ours is pretty old, so I try to stay away from it b/c I'm worried about the seals. I think if you have a newer microwave, then it should be very well sealed, so you should be fine hanging out near it.

@Geekinheels...I'm Chinese and since I can remember, my mom has told me to not stand in front of the microwave. I still use a microwave to heat up food but my mom rarely uses hers. When she reheats, she steams on the stove. I'm sure once baby comes, she'll re-emphasize the how-tos of heating up food and sterilizing.

I never really thought about it either, and I have never distanced myself from the microwave, pregnant or not.

That being said, the hubs and his family (who are Chinese) are against using the microwave for infants — they insist on heating up food on the stove, and won't even let me use microwavable sterilizers for bottle & breast pump parts! (We boil to sterilize instead.)

My husband is an engineer and took a lot of physics back in the day. The way he explained it to me (I hope I get this right! Sometimes he talks and it goes over my head!) is that microwaves "wiggle" (you know, move in that wave shape) in a predictable way. As in there is a set height from the top of the wave to the bottom. So, the grill on the front of the microwave prevents any of them from escaping and harming us humans. I think there might be legitimate concerns with what happens to the food when you microwave it in plastic or something. I don't know anything about that though. (Ok, least eloquent response ever, but hopefully yall get what I'm trying to say)

I try not to stand too close to it once its one, but the bottom line is I still ea t the food that has been heated in the microwave and still stand directly in front of it to open the door so I'm guessing I'm still affected by it. we dont use our microwave very much since we have a grill/toaster oven and we eat most of our stuff freshly cooked.

No, not really, I will stand in front of it if it is only going to be on for a very short amount of time. If not, I usually have something else to be doing while waiting.

Honestly? I hadn't even thought about it! I do stand in front of it when I'm impatiently waiting for my bagel to heat up, though. :) I have started putting a pillow between me and my laptop now when that's on my stomach and I don't put my cell phone on my belly anymore either. :)

I don't know that this has ever crossed my mind. I wouldn't say I stand there and stare at my microwave but I also don't bust out a tape measure to make sure I'm standing far enough away. I usually pop something in and go about doing something else until it beeps.

It crossed my mind briefly, but then DH who is a computer engineer laughed at me and told me microwaves are so well sealed they use old ones as a signal/frequency blockers at work to test equipment. I don't stay away from them anymore - because he is even more cautious about things harming our unborn baby than I am!

haha. I'm always careful to stay away too, but it's all in my head. If you were affected by the "waves" your skin would actually get hot/burn before you would be internally affected. In fact the people who invented microwaves didn't even have doors on the models for a while...not that I recommend that. I looked it up once because we had an old microwave at our old place that I lovingly named the "cancer box".

I was watching an episode of The Rachel Zoe Project where she was pregnant but standing RIGHT in front of the microwave. She made a comment that microwaves aren't good for unborn babies (um, it's not good for anybody) but continued standing there anyway. Do you stand back or not care? I try to be at least 6 feet away. I don't know where I learned this but that seems to be the distance stuck in my head.
