Coming from a family of alcoholic and drug abusers I make it a point to never be intoxicated around my son. Where. He gets older I will have to help him navigate our genetics and how to be responsible. Not looking forward to that...

I'm definitely a stress eater and I don't want to be modeling mindless snacking and stress eating. Everyone over 40 in my family is obese so I'm trying to be healthy for my kids and model appropriate responses to stress.

Selfish comments. The other day we were in an elevator on a very high floor and it stopped to let other people on. Right before the door opened DH said, Oh great now we have to stop and let people on. People entered and then, sure enough, as it slowed to the next stop, LO announces loudly with exasperation, Oh great! NOw we have to stop and let more people on!! (Believe me, it was not cute!) :silly:
I also made a similar comment for another situation (my selective memory forgets) that she repeated so it is not just DH working on this one.
Note to self: selfish, rude comments must be sanitized in public or said in your head!

The only one that occurred to us to cut back on was all the bad words. My little tape recorder cheerfully repeats them over and over to all who will listen :silly:

No. Which is why the girls will question if we go anywhere in the morning and I haven't had any coffee :silly: .

I feel it's sort of like talking to them about sex: if I'm silent about it or secretive, they're going to figure some stuff out anyway, but I'll lose the opportunity to give them my perspective and have an open discussion about it. If there's a habit I'm trying to change I'll usually talk pretty openly about it. Like cutting back on soda. I'm not really a drinker, but I'll have a beer or glass of wine on rare occasions. The coffee stays.

I'm more likely to hide things from her so she won't ask for them. So I drink coffee and wine or beer in front of her and she knows that's only for grown ups. Probably if I had a soda in front of her I would call it wine so she wouldn't ask (awesome parenting right there, right?). Candy I don't eat in front of her unless I want her to have some too. Basically unless it's completely off limits, I can only eat it in front of her if I want to share. So I eat dessert after bedtime.

I am happy for her to see us having a glass of wine or beer responsibly though. And when she is much older I'd let her have a few sips so it's not taboo. We just aren't big soda drinkers anyway.

I'd rather illustrate moderation than hide it from my kids. I rarely drink (not now while pregnant) and seldom have soda but if I feel like getting a Coke while we're out at dinner with the kids - I'm getting one! I feel the same way about all junk food. Moderation! We eat veggies and good foods at every meal so the vast majority of what I model to them is healthy eating. :)

No, we don't have a problem with drinking an occasional soda/beer/wine in front of our kids!

Yeah, we cut down on candy for a long time until DS was mature enough to just have a little (and not stay up for hours from the sugar rush). We hardly ever had any at dinner till he was three or so.

I try and model healthy habits - so I always have water at dinner even if I would love to crack open a coke.

But I have no issues with having coke, wine, whatever around her during special occasions - out at a restaurant, on vacation, hanging by the beach, etc. I want to teach her everything in moderation

Nah, if i feel like i need to hide something I would probably lean toward changing the behavior all together. I have a pretty bad diet soda habit and i definitely should cut back, but it never occured to me to hide it from the kids.

@SweetCaroline: I actually agree that I'd rather drink wine in front of my son than soda! For two reasons, to model responsible drinking, and also because he can't have any, so there would be no question of him asking for it.

I don't drink soda in front of my kid, junk food is almost strictly for after his bedtime, and my husband has stopped having his nightly beers because we don't want LO growing up assuming any of those things are necessary on a day to day basis.

We do have them at special occasions so he's not missing out on treats, but occasional instead of everyday.

Thus is probably super weird, but I am more likely to cut back on pop rather than wine in front of my kids. My kids will probably see me drink wine a few nights a week (1 glass/night, not with dinner). I'll probably mostly drink pop at work, maybe one on Saturdays at home.

Coffee...one cup a day! That's not changing.

I recently started drinking Diet Coke again, after kicking the habit for years. It's not the world's worst vice, but I noticed recently that I make it a point to never drink soda in front of the kids! Probably a lesson to be learned there but for now I am ignoring it.

I also don't drink wine in front of the kids when possible, although I've heard that it's better to drink wine with your dinner in front of the kids so that your kids understand how to drink responsibly. First though, I probably need to learn how to drink responsibly myself.
