I never massaged. I have thought about it with DD, but I don't think I will do it with her either. I just don't think it is something that I would keep up doing on a regular basis.

Not pregnant yet, but since I'm a massage therapist, you bet I will be massaging my baby!

Actually, prenatal massage is very beneficial for both mother and baby. When we learned prenatal, we didn't actually get to work on women who were actually pregnant, (we were allowed to, but only a couple signed up for the clinics we did who were actually pregnant). My current workplace does not allow us to massage pregnant women's bellies, but my friend has some awesome stories about doing so, (with permission from the client, of course) from her school days.

We learned infant massage in class, and I would love to take a CE course specifically for infant/pediatric massage. Massage for babies can help with a lot of problems, like colic, (and since I was a very colicky baby, that's one "weapon" I want in my arsenal!). Plus, it can be very calming for both parent and baby, can help with bonding, development, and more, even if baby is healthy. Many therapists do provide infant massage, however, most prefer to teach mom or dad to do it. One of my instructors does group or private classes for parents and their babies, so if you're interested, check your area for local classes!

Plus, ever have "growing pains" as child? Massage can help with that, too, (and so much more)...it's not just for adults. I plan to massage my children from the start, and hopefully avoid some of the problems I see so often in my adult clients. Minus the time when they are embarrassed to get a massage from Mom! ;)

And no worries, Mr. Bee! Infant massage is very light. A lot of people think massage has to hurt to be effective, and it really doesn't, especially when dealing with tiny bodies.

LiddleKidz.com is an awesome resource for therapists and parents alike who want to learn more about infant and/or pediatric massage.

when our first baby was in NICU, a physical therapist would come visit all the long term NICU babies. she showed us how to do baby massage on our LO to help with blood circulation and also to help soothe any gas or constipation issues. it helped him relax and also gave us a chance to bond with him.

I plan on doing this. My friend (who is also pregnant) is an infant and toddler specialist and has taught parents how to do infant massage for years. She's going to show me.

I've never heard anything about infant massage being dangerous, although obviously I don't think it's like you're giving a deep tissue massage to a baby.

I do this with lotion on nights we don't give him a bath ... if he's sleepy enough to tolerate it.

I worry that I'll do something wrong. I "massage " her tummy sometimes to try to help get the poo out though!

I heard once that anything beyond a light massage can be dangerous? I don't have a source for that though.

I give my LO massages every once in a while. I mostly just rub her back, tummy, legs and arms :)

I stArted massaging the LO every once in awhile since she was born. Interesting because my sister told me her co-worker's nanny thats Indian starts the day off with a massage session for her LO. Apparently many different cultures believe in the benefits of baby massage.

I came across this little article/video that suggests massaging babies consistently has health developmental benefits.

http://www.wcax.com/story/16220863/the-benefits-of-baby-massage

It looks like such a great bonding experience. I doubt at 9 months my wiggly baby will lay there and let me rub her down anymore. But perhaps for the next one?

Do you/will you try baby massaging?
